i've been watching too much cable news lately. melancholy has set in. which, quite naturally, brings one to mope rock. one of the few musical genres we haven't explored. (for good reason, some might say.)

what's your top mope rock band/singer?

top mope rock song?

for me, no contest. morrisey (solo) and with the smiths.

and mopest of mope rock:

my number two band and song ('cause the cure is too easy):

what gets your mope on?

Yeah, it's gotta be The Smiths and The Cure for me. Easy, yes, but just right on.

Anything by Joy Division. It's not rock, but I don't think there's a sadder record (and better) than Nick Drake's Pink Moon.

Radiohead to a point.
Red House Painters, yes.
Mark Eitzel or American Music Club, absolutely.

Let me add Interbabe Concern by the Loud Family. Even when the song is a maelstrom of noise, Scott Miller is the perfect whiner. Divorce will do that to you, I hear. Just one sample lyric - Reading it, it's hard to believe it could possibly translate to music. That's the difference between him and us:

"Such Little Nonbelievers"

Uncriticizable you
Unadorned, therefore not poorly adorned

We're fighting smiling Irish, they say that we look good in uniform, and mais oui!
So good you couldn't pry the cold dead fingers of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders free

We're action at a distance, we're forces; They say we're cute when we're mad, and we are!
So cute there's not an animation product in Japan we don't out-sparkle by far

Don't try to tell me we weren't inches away
From turning the tables and using what used you and me
Courtney, such little nonbelievers, aren't we?
Courtney, are you sure all your problems were me?
Courtney, I think we missed our chance to be free

You're finding focus now, your big project is finding the perfect way to leave me
And everybody needs their own big project, time that's set aside for something stress-free

Will you be eating ice cream three meals a day?
Will tango music play? Will he be better than me?
Courtney, such little nonbelievers, aren't we?
Courtney, are you sure all your problems were me?
Courtney, I think we missed our chance to be free

These two fellas are what my wife refers to as 'suicide music' - yes, a bit melancholy, but so damned good. Elliott's story was made that much more sad by the fact that he stabbed himself to death in his kitchen a few years back. A sad day for mope rock.

Check out 'Figure 8' or 'Summer in the Southeast'...

katy song by Red House Painters
lately by The Helio Sequence
Thom Yorke's solo work (the eraser album in particular)

and it may be too grand to fit this category, but Pink Floyd The Wall is some of the most brilliantly depressing music that will ever be created.

Heard this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8kxB98v9C0) while working on my bike at 6-something this morning and it was just right for a grey windy day in Seattle.
