The discussion on the Velonews article that Dave Kirk posted got me wondering what the ride is like. Love the look.

It's not mine, but belongs to a buddy. He says it is a wonderful riding frame.

Tom Milton rode his on our 600k last year and also on PBP. He's got a great page on the bikes here (http://www.mcmwin.com/calfee%20bamboo.htm) Send him a message using the contact link if you have specific questions.

I am not so sure as I have heard the ride described as a bit wooden. Sorry, too obvious and no doubt done to death.

no, but I'd love to try my hand at building a bamboo/hemp cargo bike similar to the ones CC was building in Africa. Hopefully he'll post an instructional one day.

I saw the bamboo storage room when I was at Calfee last summer and the inventory is large. Each tube is hand selected, based on the frame size and riders weight to create the stiffness that is best for that person.

So, be sure that a Bamboo frame that you ride was made for a person of similar weight.

This is genrally true also for all carbon models of Calfee- most are made after being ordered, and may not have the same stiffness layup if the original rider was outside the rider weight range of the normal tubeset.

I saw a most cool Bamboo cross bike with canti bosses that was ridden at worlds.

I talked to a guy in 2001 @ Hawaii Ironman who had bamboo #4. He said that it was the most comfortable riding bike that he had ever owned. He did not get any chain rub on the crank when he was hammering.

Most of the participants had very aero bikes. The cross winds blew about 15 of them off their bikes out on the highway that year. Lower profile bamboo bike was crosswind resistant.

Of all the bikes that I have ever seen, the bamboo bike is certainly the best looking.

cheers,
