Campagnolo Front derailleur Nylon Insert

I was wondering if anyone knew if the nylon insert in the 10 speed campagnolo front derailleur is removed when you use a 9 speed chain or just when you use an 8 speed chain? (I tried an 8 speed chain and with the insert installed and that didn't really work because it was just too narrow for the chain)

I tried the campagnolo website but it just told me how to remove it.

Branford' site (http://www.branfordbike.com/cgi-bin/perlshop/perlshop.cgi?ACTION=push&thispage=hub/hub05.html&ORDER_ID=311785240#item2) suggests removing it only for use w/ 8 speed chains.
Leave it in for 9/10.

my 10s FD works very well with a 9s chain with the insert in place. never tried it without.

for the record, the RD is also 10s and also works perfectly straight out of the box.
