I can't recall _EVER_ seeing that kind of failure before. How did it happen and did you know it when it happened?

Well, I am not really sure...

Last Sunday I was riding and the screw that attaches the RD cage to the RD body had worked itself loose enough to let the internal spring let go. It happened suddenly as I went over a train track. I could tell as soon as it happened as the unsprung arm let the chain go slack. I stopped pedaling and assessed the damage figuring I would just unscrew it the rest of the way stick it in my pocket, take some links out of the chain, and single speed it home.

Truth be told I cleaned the RD up and reassembled it BEFORE I even noticed the cracks. I don't know if the damage was there before and this is the first time I noticed it or if it cracked on the first pedal stroke after it let go.

It was weird that it happened on the train tracks that I ALWAYS warn everyone I am riding with about. They cross the road at such a shallow angle, if you don't hop them or dip right and come left to increase the angle it can be ugly. Last year a guy riding behind me tried to follow my bunny hop ... unsuccessfully. He went down at about 20mph but somehow barely damaged himself or the bike.
