mud clearance in case of dismounting and having to run a in the muck and then not being able to click back in. its not a weight savings thing.
i think the lightest bike on the day was 16.5 lbs.

It would have been 16.52 if we kept the plastic bits.

Just sayin'

I would hate to have some dude run over me in a race pile up with those things.

I agree. They look neat.

My question is: does the plastic round bit have a functional role?

hot spots

Pedals do not cause hot spots. mis-fitted shoes and insoles cause hot spots.

oh, and my podium girls...they cause hot spots

I agree with Big Daddy;

The Speedplay "cleat" is isolated from the shoe and dropping
the plastic shouldn't change the pressure on your foot too much. I think
the plastic does help with centering the pedal while clipping in, though.
I'd love to try that setup.

at that point is there a reason not to use eggbeaters?

Becuase egg beater look like eggbeaters while those look like the logo for West Coast Choppers.

hot spotsNice looking pedals, but you may be right about hot spots. Some believe when a rider uses very stiff carbon shoes that what’s under the sole shouldn’t matter because concentrated pedal/cleat forces transmitted to the balls of the feet are spread out by the shoes’ stiffness.

Logically that is correct; but it “assumes” that other pedal design factors don’t also contribute to hot spots.

for a second I got all deja vu-y, but then I realized I was totally mistaken, O'Grady's tweak is cool; this guy's is just...I dunno, tweaky:
