Who makes a decent balaclava? Better to go "tech" fabric or wool? Thanks all.

I also like my Pearl Izumi if it is not too cold. The foxwear is extremely warm and will air dry quickly, especially if you ride with it on your handlebars. Foxwear headband is great too. The socks are great also.

I've got a really nice Smartwool that I wore all winter and like it a lot.

I like the Greek ones with walnuts and honey. They
feel real good against my face on a cold ride... no that's a Baklava

I like tech fabric ones because they are light, wind resistant
and smooth. Sugoi is my fave.

I have models from both Pearl Izumi and UnderArmour and they both work well...although I tend to favor the UA for the construction technique since it's slightly more comfortable.
I'll probably purchase a SmartWool one for next year since they make such nice garments.

Wow, must be hard to maintain that riding posture! Pretty aero, though, I'll grant you that.

;)

p.s. Isn't the whole idea of using a balaclava for protection when it is 'too cold'? I don't even use one for skiing.

I have this one, it's very nice and fits better than the Icebreaker. I wore them both on days when it was less than 10 degrees.

I find it very sad that someone is asking about Balaclava's in mid-April.

It is time for summer!

Hey, I wore one yesterday. It was a claimed 45 degrees with 20 mph winds - it felt more like 25 degrees and my lungs do not like cold air. Coldest ride I ever did in 45 degree weather.

Well, I admit I made certain assumptions

But the OP gives his location as NW Washington which put him not very far from me

And I want Summer. Now.

Seirus Combo-Clava or similar are great for very cold. The head is faily thick fleece so may not fit under all helmets. The face part is neoprene with holes poked in to breath out.

Very warm, very breathable. Maybe be too warm if it is above 40F.

Me too! I'm just south of you in Whatcom County WA.... I am just thinking ahead for the coming cold weather. I'm an ultra-distance runner (without much cycling gear) getting into cycling.

They also make a very thin one (for going under ski helmets) that's surprisingly warm, very light, and breathes pretty well -- no fleece and no neoprene, but if it's not bitter cold it's really good under a bike helmet.

Craft balaclava, with that great weave and their high quality, it's been a joy every time I've used it in the last 2 years.

Last I checked, the earth spins on a North-South axis, not East-West, and that axis is roughly perpendicular to the plane of rotation about the sun...

I lived in Abbotsford and Vancouver for many years - I know Whatcom County roads very well.
