View Full Version : Why not a Campagnolo 28.6 front derailleur?

I was just wondering if anyone knows why campagnolo stopped making front derailleurs with 28.6mm clamp besides thinking steel frames are dead?

Good sir:
What are the drawbacks to a) braze-ons and b) 28.6 braze-on adapters? Because you are not a weight weenie (according to Bicycling magazine), I will guess it's not grams. I'm interested to know, because I've had two 28.6 bikes on which I've used adapters. Several more have had braze-ons.
Sincerely,
Your AWS®

braze-ons are fine. i even designed and cast my own part
that many famous and not so famous builders use on their
frames. (note: donation made.). but on the off chance that
someone wants an odd ratio and the braze-on placement is
in doubt, or limits the frame to compact versus normal rings
or vice versa, a clamp is a must. and i think it's patently
foppish on campagnolo's part to eschew their longstanding
liaison with hand builders (as opposed to industrial makers)
for whom 28.6 is a normal spec, and suggest to them that
a generic clamp from problem solvers is what we should get
and affix a braze-on front der to it. for that very stupid logic,
i had them sell me the remaining stock of 28.6 clamp bodies
(in 2007) so that could have the ability to retrofit a braze-on
front der or a front der from a 31.8 clamp and still use it on
one of my frames. okay - now i'm agitated. whose frame is
in the jigmo? poor sod atmo.

Braze-ons are fine if you know exactly what your chainring size will be for the life of the bike. I've bounced back and forth between 46 and 53 on one of my bikes and would have been screwed if I had gone with a bz-on.

As for the adapter, they're ugly and unnecessary. Just make a 28.6 derrailleur. There are still plenty of standard 28.6 seattube bikes out there and still many being made.

I did what Mr. Sachs did and stocked up on Campy 28.6 clamps. I recently disassembled a Racing T 35mm derrailleur and swapped the clamp out with a 28.6.

Also have a small stash of Campy 1" threaded headsets, for fear that they'll stop producing those.

just to remind folks, the 2008 derailleurs have the non-removeable clampmo
which has a rivot not an allen key connecting the cage. trying to swap those no worky.

Buying a problem solver clamp is like buying a french tickler from the men's room at the Stuckey's. It might work, but it really isn't optimal, or what nature intended for us to do.
