I became a fan of Michael Shermer after reading several of his books. At first I did not know the guy who wrote "How We Believe: The Search for God in an Age of Science" also produced "Sport Cycling: A Guide to Training, Racing, and Endurance" which was also on my book shelf.

Thanks for posting this - I read it in the print edition, and failed in my attempt to track it down online.

It's nice to see a rigorous analysis of the situation. Game theory makes perfect sense as the analytical tool, and the conclusion (though not surprising) get some support from the method and data.

p.s. Michael Shermer is a big cyclist.

Funny coincidence; I get SciAm at home and just got to read this article last night.
I meant to post about it today.
I'll echo the other comments and say I really enjoyed it. I love seeing scientific method applied to situations like doping.
The math behind it is intuitive and I'd like to think I understodd it at some subconscious level before reading the article but now it's really clear in my mind.
