By the beginning of May, what kind of mileage will you average per week?

Generally about 12k/year but not in regular 1000 mile month increments. At the beginning and end of the year 800-900 then bigger months in May-Oct. Just did my first 1000+ mile month this month.

I hoping to be doing 25+ three mornings a week, and another 50 on a weekend ride. This schedule is coming together as of last Monday. By July, I'll be riding 6 days a week. That will last until morning daylight runs out in late September.

I'd hope to be doing my usual 16-mile commute 5 times a week, plus another 10-mile extension one day and a 60-miler every fortnight, which puts me over 100. In reality I'll probably only commute by bike 4 days a week, manage a 60-miler every 3 weeks and the additional 10 miles every other week, so put me down for sub-100 :-(

Do I get double points for MTB miles?

I'm down for 100-150, since that's what I've done in the past. However, We're expecting our first child this spring, so I'm expecting a rather sudden drop (to zero?)

My 20 mile round trip commute gives me a hundred/week to start, so hopefully I'll end up in the 150-200 mile/week category once the days get longer and the weather gets nicer.

Do I get half points for tandem miles?

I tell myself that when ever I am in the hills.
16 miles in over an hour :crap:

Depends on who your stoker is. Pick the right (or wrong) one and you just might deserve double for those too.

By early May I hope the weather is decent enough (which doesn't mean decent...but not snowing and above 40 in the morning) that I can be commuting at least 4 days a week...which gives me at least 40 miles a day...and time wise at least 1.5-2 hours in the morning and 1.4-2 hours in the evening. (as time goes on, the time for the ride gets shorter...I suppose I get faster?)

I'm glad you asked for early May, not "right now."

Hours are measured in 70 minute increments I've heard. I'll be following the advice for time in the coffin atmo.

For base mileage it's just the amount of time past the first 90 minutes - what I call draining the battery. I can go out for less than 90 minutes without a water bottle or food and be fine. Much more than that and my body needs to process food, which is the basis for my endurance work. No intensity happens until I have enough base mileage time.

How do you know when you have enough of a base?

Every winter I ride my fixed gear and go down in gearing until I can just about keep up with people on geared bikes. This year I'm running a 42x18 as my low. I also purchase two pairs of Pearl Izumi bib tights. When I wear holes in both pairs of tights, I have enough base. That roughly translates to at least 50 hours past the first 90 minutes - I'm pretty serious about my base mileage.

Could you get a higher MPB if you switched to a hybrid?

Darren gets it. Especially when you're doing your base miles.

No computer, so I use my watch... 2 to 3 hours a day in Southern California.
