Dekonick got me thinking, nothing like closing out the week with some driving, edgy, rock & roll. Been a Floyd fan forever....not the one wearing the patch.

'One of these days'.

Studio version...was that a trout or a frog riding the bicycle??? Interesting video.

Echoes... before they went "commercial" with Dark Side of the Moon.

Of course, ideally, one's consciousness is "enhanced" when listening. :D

..and it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around....
..with.without. and who'll deny it's what the fightings all about...

yah, good stuff

I would put the Clash in the same category of lyrics with a meaning, though of course totally different musical style, and not always as easy to decipher, but right up there

I saw these guys at Radio City Music Hall, playing at 1:00am in the Spring of 1973 after rising up through a cloud of smoke from the orchestra pit. They played Echos, Dark Side of the Moon, and Obscured By Clouds. WOW! Memorable....

Careful with that Axe, Eugene. Dark Side of the Moon was late, commercial, and brilliant...but it was here that they lost contact with their inner Syd.

The last time I saw them was in 88 or 89 at Foxboro stadium...Momentary lapse of Reason tour if I recall correctly. Fast forward about two years, I'm walking across the quad in front of the MU at OSU wearing a PF t-shirt I bought at that concert. Some big guy who was on the football team made a snide comment about my PF shirt as he walked by me. I quipped back something about the teams 0 & 10 record and how it equates to IQ. He didn't like that at all (hey, he started it). Let's just say that I'd be willing to bet that he hasn't said anything to anyone wearing a Pink Floyd t-shirt again.

Roger Waters can really write some deep lyrics...

Gilmore has a gift for instrumental sets...

Too bad they split after the final cut.

I love just about every album they have released...

See Emily play....

also - the best concerts I have seen by far. I was probably the only sober person in the audience...

The Pink Floyd Sound.
Pink and Floyd were Jazz musicians. They have nothing to do with Pink Floyd other than that they were the inspiration for the band's name and I think Syd liked their playing style...

Have you seen this version where 2001: A space odyssey is synchronized to Echoes?

Fantastico!

And yes, the first three or four songs of Final Cut in video format tell a great story as well - http://youtu.be/XPPpJCZb-L8

I remember hearing somewhere that "Pink Floyd" was the colloquial name to some type of illicit pink pill that was the rage in the late 60s

Most fans know this, but:
The name is derived from two blues musicians: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council

...and a lot of their songs were about Syd Barrett (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syd_Barrett) (Shine On You Crazy Diamond)

I had the chance to see Roger Waters do "The Wall" last summer in the LA Coliseum before I moved... it was pretty freaking awesome and probably the closest to Floyd I'll ever get to see... of course I was a bit concerned about the smoke around me when I got back to work... ;)

There's an interesting story of Syd showing up at the Wish You Were Here sessions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syd_Barrett#Wish_You_Were_Here_sessions).

Yup, yup! "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is quite the album, really...quintessential Syd Barrett!

Also, since we're exchanging Syd Barrett anecdotes here's another. During the recording of "Dominoes", Syd was having one of his substance-induced artists block days and couldn't figure out what to play for the lead guitar. Dave Gilmour who was in the studio with him, in a moment of weird brainstorming played the tape in reverse and had Syd add his lead guitar to it. It clicked...first time recording, it was perfect. That anecdote just makes me bow my head in respect to the crazed genius of Syd Barrett! (Read about it here: http://www.schizophrenia.com/stories/sbarrett.htm)

so crazy to think that Syd died as a lonely fat guy living in his mom's basement.

I have a copy of their first album. From high school. It was recorded on (ahem) a vinyl LP. I thought it was unbelievable. I still do. Be Careful with that Ax, Eugene. Astronomy Domine. They even did a song about a Bicycle. It is the evolution of the collaboration that is equally fascinating. Who could be prepared for 'Several species of small furry animals gathered together and grooving with a Pict' ?

I was lucky enough to have seen them several times, beginning about 72. Some of the shows are a little blurred by time and other things All in, the greatest band to have ever played. No need to say more, it is clear all on this thread have similar stories and thoughts about PF
