Hey folks-

I'll be at a conference in New York next week and will be staying at the Park Central Hotel Monday-Thursday nights before going to Boston to visit an old friend on Friday morning. I'll be quite busy with going to talks and my own presentations, but my wife is joining me from Wednesday on.

So here's the question: where should we go to dinner on Wednesday and Thursday nights? Keep the following in mind when you make suggestions--we are a bunch of academics, not rich, and I'm certainly not used to big cities like NYC.

Thanks in advance for your collective wisdom...

Peace

Vegetarian dishes are particularly tasty there.
Shrimp with peppers over rice is also excellent.
The traditional cabbage salad before dinner is simply delicious.
Reasonable prices with very unique decor. They serve alcohol on premises.

after checking out j greenes place go over to una pizza napolatana (and give us a comparison)..on 12th st between first and second ave...seriously ---he is not fooling around...only open 4 days a week from 5 till sold out of dough. 4 pizzas to choose from and italian beer and wine and that is it...stove imported from italy cooks with wood...a true traditionalist that understands the simplicity of ingredients but how important quality is... also all his dough is mixed by hand and is left to raise naturally without the use of yeast...plus he can seriously lay it down on a mountain bike..one of the best riders i have ridden with...and a good friend....dave...

Singapore Cafe in chinatown has great malay-style food.
Big Wong in chinatown has proper cantonese noodle soups and roasted pork (surprising how hard this is to find).
Totonno's on the upper east side has very good pizza. Lombardi's in Brooklyn is also a standard.
Uncle Nick's in Hell's Kitchen has solid greek food.
Hoomoos Asli has awesome hummus/falafel/etc (and it's byob).

All are places I frequent and all are not expensive at all.

If you decide that you want a steak then I would suggest Peter Luger's... although, it's all-cash and all-expensive. (best steak on the planet, and I will fight anyone who says otherwise).

My wife read your response, Richard, and she assures me that I won't need to arrange that kind of meal

Thanks for the other suggestions, folks. Keep' em coming...

Oh- and an added criterion: we like to drink!

Wander down to Chinatown and just go somewhere that looks good.

I used to love Hanmura An (soba, made while you wait) and Hangawi (Korean vegetarian banquet food) when I lived in NYC.

This guy has been my choice for years...Jean George Vongerichten...This is his take on a local spot. Always had good food here. Pricey, but you will get a great meal.

Besides reminding Keno that I am thirsty for a Sierra Nevade, ask him for some great places.......He is a good guy. (yeah really) and he and Flydhest are some of the wisest men on here.

Good suggestions, all. Blue Jays: I have been to Roy's in Chicago and it was nice. Pizza sounds good, and we may splurge one night on a more expensive meal so I'll check those other suggestions.

Gennaro, on amsterdam near 94th (i think) is excellent. Owned and run by the chef, who cooks every night, fantastic italian food. Reasonable prices, but they take only cash, and be prepared to wait in line.

Chanterelle is really fantastic, too, but another level of price entirely. I think they have a prix fixe lunch, though (which, downtown, is usually the best deal on dining in the city). Very romantic.

Cheers. Enjoy.

Splurge one night and go to Remi's on 54th and 7th. Order the risotto of the day and ossobuco. Finish with cappucino. Then, swear off ever eating northern Italian again because you've just had the best.

Bud, you would definitely enjoy the Korean at-your-table barbecue places in the area surrounding Penn Station, not to mention it's an easy transportation hub.

Nice idea. And we're taking the train out of there on Friday mid-day, so we'll check it out.

Thanks.

Oh man. You might as well have asked what is your favorite color or number. There are so many good restaurants and varying opinions on this topic. In general, you really can't go wrong in NYC. Depending on how picky you are, it is hard to find bad food really. What is tough is that feeling that the grass is always greener in terms of where you eat and where else you could have eaten.

If you could narrow down what you are looking for, that would make it easier to offer some places. Here are some of my favorites

German: Upper East Side

BBQ: Midtown/times square area

Brazilian Steak House: Midtown Absolutely great for a group of people to hang out stress free and just eat and chat.

Cuban/Latino Food: Upper West Side - great place for just the wife and you. Fun atmosphere. Great food.

Yes.
The meat and fish are of higher quality (especially the pork).
The pork belly comes with coarse salt and pepper for dipping (yum)!
The wait staff are very friendly and will fuss over you.
The side dishes (included) are very tasty and they keep em coming. :D
