Brent Ruegamer built a similar bike (8 lbs)for a guy )"donald" on weight weenies)in the Bay area that is supposedly ridden all the time. After spending that much coin ($10-12K?), you'd hope to get some use out of it.

I can understand the project to build a light bike for a trade show as a discussion point or a vehicle to show off some new cranks or other components - the final weight being as light as possible is most likely the sole objective - But how "real world" usable is something like this? Of course the guy rode it a few miles - will this be rideable in 5 years and 35,000 miles? If your going down a hill at 35 mph and hit a pothole does that exceed the bike's design capabilities or will your riding buddy need a spatula?

Also if something is about to give way - is there any warning on a bike like this? Or will your riding buddy need that spatula again?

Ok I understand - thats not the point of this bike.

Each of my bikes is about 3x the weight of this thing and I like being able to bunny hop curbs and go off road as part of my normal rides.

But if this thing is about 3x as fast as my bike... :rolleyes:

hmmm, wonder what it'd weigh as a fixie? :p

Should we just weigh our bikes at registration and eliminate all that messy riding around part? :bike:

Yo man, those stickers add an extra 2000watts of power! Hmm, interesting thought: So are weight-weenies the analog to the "too fast and furious" crowd in the auto-world... :D

Because he spent too much on making the bike uberlight, he had to downgrade to an older drivetrain. :cool:

The guy must be some kind of stud. Maybe it's flat so he only needs 6 cogs.

The biggest thing I noticed besides the weight was the drop from the saddle to the bars. When/if he rides in the drops he mus almost pass out from the blood running to his head. He could also be a circus freak with super long arms!

Auto engineers can learn so much from this guy.
That’s like a 2000-lb compact SUV costing $200,000.
They’re missing out on such an opportunity.

wow, everyone ready to jump in and attack that thing and say how stupid it is and how no one could possibly ride it etc. etc. but someone posts a picture of some hurting bike with a zero offset seatpost, a saddle pushed all the way forward on its rails. 50mm of spacers, a -17' stem installed upside down and gay bars tilted back like a DUI schwinn varisty and its all peaches and cream...especially if its some sort of "custom" geometry that is thouroughly unrideable.

dude who has that bike pursued a project and he succeeded. its nothing to laugh at or dismiss. i think its pretty freaking awesome.

the weightweenie people are very euro and a bit humorless but they do ride and race the hell out of their bikes....and overall the aesthetic and balance of the bikes that appear in their gallery is vastly superior to what appears in this forum.

Nuts. This bike is like a Lotus Exige thats been upgraded with ti bolts, carbon fiber composite seats and body parts, custom fabricated lite weight intake plumbing, upgraded lite weight exhaust and uber lite forged rims.

Lots of problems can be solved if we throw enough money at them, but what does it prove? That we have lots of discretionary funds to spend, or that we’re willing to compromise durability, safety, etc.?

Granted it’s an interesting exercise that makes a bold statement, but it’s about as irrelevant to most as a 100 MPG car that costs a million to manufacture. Awesome yes, practical no.

Holly Crap nobody said how uncomfortable the saddle appears to be. That fellow must have buns of steel.

I respect lightweight bikes we have come a long ways in lbs from when I started riding. My Mountain Bike weighs what my first Road Bike Weighed in at.

We have also come a long way in comfort. I choose comfort everyone else can choose that which works best of them. My saddle has to have some padding Fi'zi:k Aliante Padding.

Other than to comply with what we are used to seeing and others expect, extending the steerer to then go level makes little functional sense. Direct path is good.

The cool thing about building unique stuff ourselves is that we can build them to meet our own needs and/or desires and not be limited by what the masses would buy.

This 7-pound bike makes absolutely no sense to me. Similarly, my one-of-a-kind camping van probably makes absolutely little sense to most people. So what, why should we care what others think?

IMO there is nothing wrong with pursuing dreams or challenges that make sense only to us and maybe a few others. More power to nonconformist and their crazy toys. :beer:
