I'm still at work. Beer is not allowed here. Since it is 80 degrees out, I'm going for a ride after work. After that I have either a Heineken or a Kirin left in the refrig. Not exotic, I know, but it will be cold and tasty after the ride.

A couple months ago I had the opportunity to try some new porters or stouts...I can't remember which variety is the stronger of the two.
Anyway, one of them almost had a coffee-like or even chocolate undertone to it. Very intense flavor. The beverage was tasty, but I think I would have to sip it over the course of two hours, it was so strong! ;)

Has a lot of different botanicals so it has a real different refreshing taste. It is really nice to drink over the rocks but a little tonic is sometimes nice. I'm going to do some work on the Vanilla so some botanicals are nice. I'd like to try the beer though.

darren, we need to catch one together sometime...i've read a bunch of your beer posts and it seems we have similar tastes.

i'm a huge fan of huge IPAs. haven't had the opportunity to try a hopsickle (nice name) though. lately it's been the bells hop slam for me...a seasonal imperial (with a tiny season) that has recently hit town at 10% in draught form. get it while you can! their two hearted ale is a lot more common and also wonderful...the hop slam is basically two hearted syrup. but they just make excellent beer generally...expedition stout is among the best imperial stouts i've had, and their oberon is an excellent summer/wheat.

i digress. back to other big IPAs i love...rogue i2pa, avery maharaja (saw one in your latest sampler), flying dog double dog (technically a double pale, no india), stone ruination.

those should keep you hoppin' for a while...

Pabst Pounder, ice coldMy grandfather spent a good part of his career as a chemist trying to remove the "can" taste from Pabst's cans. I loved him dearly, but I can't say he succeeded. And if he had, well, it still would have been Pabst in the can.

just came from the local watering hole, warming up for the aforementioned tobacco rd. showdown. i'm in chapel hill, btw.

did a little a/b two-fisted comparo of a couple draught imperial stouts...foothills 'sexual chocolate' (winston-salem, nc - new to me, but very highly regarded) vs. bells 'expedition' (comsotck, mi - an all time favorite). both at 10+%!

the sex lives up to its name...sweet(ish), smooth, and seductive (more please!), but i think i prefer the bells by a very slight margin. it's got a little more bitter roasty going on. two very similar beers...can't go wrong either way, unless you don't like big stouts.

dook sucks! go 'heels!

The double dry-hop addition elevates the grapefruit-like aroma and flavor to an outrageous intensity, while the added malt raises the alcohol level from 7% all the way to 10% by volume."

Darren, I admire and thank you for your devotion to the amber beverage. I love my vino but there is nothing even touches that first sip of beer when you have been hankering for it. And the many sips thereafter of course. I would love one right now expect that I am at work...

At Easter (a four day weekend in Aus) down at the in laws beach house we are having a blind beeer tasting night. It will be interesting whether my favourite European lagers still come out on top when I can't see the label. Wine tasting nights are common so why not beer?

Darren, if you were located in or around Melbourne you could be MC.

Didn't want to see the color of the beer-- it would have given some of them away. I drink 4 of those 6 often and wanted to do a blind tasting without any preconceived bias. I tend not to like the IPAs coming out of San Diego and wanted to test that theory... theory proven (bottom 2 are from SD). They definitely have a regional style down there, which is good, atmo.

I have a slection of Italians to choose from tonight (now 5.20 pm Friday night in Melbourne and just about to head home so i can almost taste them): Moretti, Dreher, Messina, Peroni Gran Riservera and Menabrea.

Any thoughts on any of those suckers Darren? I like them all, although the double malt Peroni is only a one or two bottle beer as it is a bit rich and strong.

I do have a soft spot for clean, crips Euro lagers...

Yes, you do.

It is unique; there really are no others like it. Ed Stoudt told me about his plans for this beer a couple of years ago, and he hit his mark. I'm not sure it's a great one for the ages, but it is interesting to taste the strong, clean lager Bock malt profile with IPA-level bitterness and American hop flavors.

If you can't get it locally, PM me and I'll put a couple in a FedEx mailer.

Southeast PA is Bockbier heaven. Between this guy, the world-class Victory products, Troegenator*, and Sly Fox on the bench, there is almost no need for regular trips to Upper Franconia. (Bamberg is my Amsterdam, atmo.)

(* = OK, pushing the definition of SEPA a bit)

Last night I attended the Hard Liver festival, a month of barleywine drinking at my local beer hall - the brouwer's cafe. They currently have 52 different examples on tap. It's really over the top.

I drank barleywine from Hales, Hair of the Dog, Rogue, Walking Man, Lagunitas, and not surprisingly I forget the last one. I don't normally like barleywine... certainly wouldn't drink it on a regular occasion. But I can't argue with the complexity of taste. Some had a lot of residual sugar, some where downright smoky, others were hoppy and green tasting, even after three or four years in a keg.

The weather report this past weekend was for rain Sat. and dry on Sun. So I plan to spend Sat. running around NYC and Sun. riding. Come Sat. AM it looks to be a nice sunny day and my computer is now telling me Sun. will be rain. Drats.

Sat. PM spent in Park Slope, Brooklyn where pints of the following were drunk:
Six Point Gorilla Warfare: coffee flavored stout, nice. A fine brewery.
Chelsea Rye IPA (cask-conditioned): delightful, complex.
Avery Maharaja IPA: excellent for the hop head.
Green Flash something-or-other IPA (also cask-conditioned): Good, but light for a double IPA.

Woke up Sun. feeling blah and looking out at looming black clouds and wind. Moped around for a few hours before deciding to risk a ride, which in the end turned out to be a fantastic, rainless, 60-miler.

These days, I'm drinking Bass and my South Pole Pale and 90 South Stout.

We have Corona (only drinkable in the 3rd world, imho), Tui (NZ cheap), Speights (NZ cheap), some Sierra Nevada, Bass and some Guinness whizzer bottles left.

I'm trying to hop the snot out of my batches, to approximate what I drink from Colorado and California. My next batch is going to be a hopzilla I'm referring to "Sh1**1n' Brix." It's sitting on 4oz of NZ Super Alpha dry hops for a week prior to bottling.

I'm so going to appreciate proper micros when I get off of this frozen ocean.

MM, that Lagunitas sure looks good. Whenever I am out in the Petaluma/Santa Rosa/Sonoma area, I drink the IPA. Never tried Maximus. Sounds like a gladiator, or a condom. Or both.

this might be a stupid question, but on the Stella bottle is says "Malt Liquor" and on the 6er holder it says "Lager"..................can it be both? I am certain there is a lot I don't know about beer, but should with the about I've consumed.

thanks for any help clearing this up for me,

Shaner

I've been liking this black beer from Germany. Very smooth, rich flavor.
"****"World classic!"-Michael Jackson (says this on the back label. I had a good LOL moment, never new Jacko reviewed beer). Regardless, it's good beer.

IIRC, beer needs to be called 'malt liquor' in some states when the alcohol gets above a certain level. Chalk it up to the various wacky US liquor laws...

2003 Qupe Bien Nacido Hillside reserve Sarah and it was decanted for 3 hours. A fanastic Sarah full of berry flavors galore.

Served with baby backed ribs with a spicey tangy BBQ sauce.

Sorry but not drinking beer tonight.

The Kulmbacher is good stuff, but I hope you're joking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Jackson_%28writer%29) about that. ^

Well,

I thought if I drank some Montreal beer it might help the Canadiens win,

so last night I brought in the St. Ambroise Blonde Pale Ale.

Quite nice indeed.

I meant, "I hope you're joking about posting in a beer thread and not knowing who Michael Jackson (http://michaeljacksonthebeerhunter.blogspot.com/) is."

I mean "was". R.I.P.

I thought with a name like Bootie, the makers of this brew were attempting to position it as a dance club beer. Turns out, it simply describes the aroma. Tallahassee Ratebeer.com member Aurelius sums up the Bootie this way: "The name sounds like some sort of nuclear isotope in a barium enema, and it delivers all the flavor the name suggests."

Made me laugh, haven't and won't try it.

Duvel and Duchesse De Bourgogne

Hank Mobley Soul Station (Prototype Blue Note Sound)

New Koolstop Salmon Pads and Fizik Tape

I can't wait for tomorrow's ride from Boulder to Gold Hill up Four Mile Canyon and dirt roads and then looped down Sunshine Canyon, with some other roads thown in to add mileage.

I could live off of Duvel alone. The Duchesse is champagne like in texture, but has a slight sourness almost like drinking apple cider.

Cheers

I reached way back into the dusty reaches of my basement stash and pulled out a Sierra Christmas Ale from 2001 earlier tonight. I should've known not to wait so long, as it was just past it's prime and a little too tart. Oh well, label on the top said $1.25, so it wasn't a huge loss.

Relaxing with a Harpoon UFO now instead.....always tasty.

Sierra Nevada's Stout. They do an excellent job on most everything. And have been around a while. Between transportation costs and hops, beer prices have gone nuts.
