To everyone who is interested:

http://ridelugged.com, in collaboration with whoever wants to be involved, has started a user controlled Google facilitated http://dirtdata.wordpress.com It's a nation-wide initative, although we only have maps for Virginia, Maryland, PA, and VT so far. Important things like road surface, where to get food, where the bridges are out, are all noted/or can be noted. Its pretty user friendly. There is a supporting blog, with a helpful key, and links to the maps that have already been started see the database as a helpful way to not only catalogue overlooked roads, but also as a useful route planning tool when used in combination with popular route planning web applications. This is no profit whatsoever, not an advert, more like a public service announcement.

Check it out if you enjoy riding on dirt roads/want to contribute/start your own map.

fantastic. is there a cue sheet we could post? add an NY map if you are interested. ridelugged and the dirtdata blog can both announce that ride as it gets closer.

'bout 50 miles north of NYC, we have dirt roads and I was given a cue sheet for a 25 mile ride that is about 75% dirt. Okay...so 25 miles isn't very long, but hey...within spittin' distance of NYC...that's pert-darn good. For being in my backyard, it has plenty of climbing, screaming downhills and wonderful scenery.

I'll see if I can map it out and offer it. Otherwise, I already have the details.

great, obviously the more mapping i dont personally have to do the better. i have a thesis to write! we'll post any cue sheet on the blog for download, but you making a map that notes the dirt specific roads is ideal. we'll still take that cue sheet... make a map, make it an open collaboration, and we'll post the link. if you have a blog, we'll credit your name with a link to that blog.

We've moved, already, to a dedicated URL (dirtdata.org). Thanks for all the interest so far. The new wiki set up (once it is fully functional) should be helpful. We have a blog and the wiki. On the wiki we are asking for users to register and contribute ideas/content directly.

I think I need to look at the site. See what I can do for Oregon. 23mm tires on rapidly drying and loosening roads make for an, ahem, interesting ride. Ask me how I know . . . . .

The rancher didn't look at me too cross-eyed, but the fully-kitted racer boys gave me some strange looks as I emerged from the forest to the pavement.

personal favorite is riding singlespeed road bikes on mtn biking trails were you're the only one without full suspension. get called a hipster alot for that. i thought it was just skill and luck, but turns out its also something someone can use against you. who knew? I added Oregon in the wiki, so just make a map, and post it to the Oregon link. Easy.
