rumor on bike tech newsgroup suggests these are no longer being made. The bike industry moves on. I know you can always? get a custom quill made, but Salsas were nice looking, good selection, quality. Gone.

Granted that Nittos are nice too, but only available in -17 degrees. I prefer to get some of the rise out of 90 degree stems so not so much quill is sticking out.

I just sent a note to David Kirk about a custom quill stem. Not only did he say he didn't make them but he said he didn't know of anyone else who made them.

Anyone know differently?

I came across this company and their quill stems.

Don't know anything about them, but the stem in the picture looks good, if not pricey. About what Serotta stems went for. IIRC.

$355.00 for a custom titanium stem?
Perhaps it may be better to go threadless for those prices.
It seems that choices are limited, and indeed a custom stem is really pricey.

for $100, but only if you purchase a frame from him.

I must have half a dozen Salsa Stems in various configurations in my basement, non eof which cost more than $15. I would speculate that we'll be seeing them on e-bay and in parts bins for the next few decades.

Too bad. I have a Salsa on my "all steel" Atlanta. Steel frame, fork and stem.

I inquired today and got the following response from Salsa: "They will hopefully be reintroduced sometime next fall."

Pretty cool company...Dave Levy (of Ti Cycles) makes the steel bikes for Hampsten...check out the Ti Clam Gun under "wacky stuff"...

The store is right off the Burke-Gilman Trail behind University Village if you happen to find yourself riding around Seattle....

I'm planning to have Sacha build one custom for me, but I sure would like to see how a 90 degree 10 cm feels before writing the specs in stone. Looks like the Salsas won't be available again soon enough. So if anyone has a 90/10 on hand, please let me here from you.

Although not quite as cheap as Salsa, there are a few sources for quill stems:

Bruce Gordon makes his chicken neck stems starting at $80:

(don't forget to check out his factory tour, too funny)

Of course, if money is no object, check out Richard Moon's stem:
