My daughter goes to school at James Madison University in Harrisonburg,Virginia and I was thinking of taking my bike down the next time I went to see her. Is anyone familiar with the road riding in that area? Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thats right by all blue ridge mountains. I couldn't give you exact routes, but there are smooth roads, huge hills, fresh farm air, and nice scenerie all throughout that area.

I bet JMU has a cycling club that would let you ride with them.

maymyride.com has 51 routes in and around Harrisonburg, and quite a few in routeslip.com as well, although some may have been ported into mapmyride already: http://www.routeslip.com/discover/USA/VA/harrisonburg

I've been there on tour in the Shenandoah Valley several times. The Valley is "aggressively rolling" and in general quite scenic. You can get a good idea of the terrain by looking on google maps and selecting the terrain view and the satellite view. Serious mountains to the east and west.

I don't know Harrisonburg all that well (having only done the annual century their club runs), but I know the Lexington area fairly well and can tell you that the riding is great. 'Rolling' is sort of an understatement for most of the county.

Also, the BRP lives up to the hype.

Stealth Hello, I have ridden in the area many times. It's truely a great area to ride. It has it all rolling, big climbs, flat farm land and brew pubs. Enjoy. JohnnyG

An interesting factoid is the highly-respected Leeolou family (as in Leeolou Student Center) contains a variety of fit sportspeople. They have shown support for the needs of cyclists and cycling in the past.
I read in one online account this family has given more than seven figures in donations to James Madison University.

I'm about 30 miles away from there. Riding on Skyline Drive is nice. Slow to no traffic midweek and only a small increase on the weekend. You do need to buy a park pass to get in. The Charlottesville Bike Club (http://www.cvillebikeclub.org/) has weekend rides that sometimes start about 30 miles/minutes from there. The site has a number of rides on this side of the Blue Ridge. I've never gotten around to riding with them, but there is a club that covers that area called Mile Post Zero (http://milepostzero.homestead.com/).
