Well,

Now we can safely go get a Blue-Ray player and not have to worry about it becoming obsolete by the HD-DVD/Blue-Ray wars.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7252172.stm

One word of caution: there have been a few releases of the Blue-Ray firmware, and some early players will not allow some discs to work. I found that out last night. But I'd say, in 6 months time, it's an all blue game!

I'm glad that's over. It was dumb that it happened in the first place.

I'm sad. A year ago our son, who was in Iraq at the time, gifted us a Toshiba HD DVD player and 5 HD movies for Christmas. I've since purchased other HD movies and was hoping for that format to rise to the top.

From what I've heard, Sony has spent a ton of money "convincing" the studios and other players (Wal-Mart for example), the the Blu-Ray is the way to go. I'm not so sure Blu-Ray is much better but it certainly is much more expensive.

Beta Max rules!

Seriously, now that the format is settled, competition can focus on building a better player and working out the transport glitches inherent in these players.

If they didn't settle it soon, both risked becoming obsolete before they took hold. The guys that sell players and DVDs had most to lose.

Question: Can you play regular (non-HD) DVD's in a Blu-ray player?Yes, and most will upconvert the quality.

Yes as it was said...

The one thing I have found out is that it is best to set your resolution to less than the one used by high-defs players, if your TV can display such images.

In other words, if your TV can display 720p, 1080i and 1080p (full HD), "force" the player and your TV to the lesser resolution, 720p or less when you are watching the the regular DVD. It will look better... You will have to experiment. Older DVDs do not look so good on my TV when I watch them at 720p.

Blu-Ray was the better technology of the two so It's like Beta-Max won!

likely a factor in the format war. there are millions of ps3 players out
there, no wonder the blue ray discs were outselling HD-DVD...

Nope. You have to by an external HD-DVD player to use with the xbox 360.

That I don't know. My hunch is that the regular DVD player that's already in the xbox 360 doesn't upconvert, so the HD DVD probably won't either.
