View Full Version : OT, sort of, Dr Evil and the freshly shorn....

SO, out for my ride on Mondy (day off) and i guy comes up at a light, i am thinking cool castelli bibs (freak 50 and sunny temps), wondering if i should try white shorts (maybe with my pink bike a cool look) when i notice pubes sticking out, sort of cured my desire for white shorts.
Well, that got me thinking about the navy divers i see working out in the gym, because they invariably seem to go commmando, and a strangely high number of these guys shave their scrotums, etc. Now i have never had the courage to ask them, but i've been in the navy awhile now, and it is only in the last 7-9 years that i started to see that happening.

I'm not sure if any cyclists do this, or if they'd admit it, but is it an austin powers thing? a porn thing? anyone "have this friend" who does it and have any comment, on the comfort for cycling shorts, or just the phenomenon in general.

You know it's pretty risky answering this kinda question. People can think all sorts'o things.

Years ago in my quest to determine the source of my recurring saddle sores,, I tried shaving 'the area'. In the end (pun intended :D ), shaving was not the answer. Ultimately, I needed some shims under my right cleat.

But more to your point. During this process, I found the following:

1) It makes it easier to lube the area with creams/ salves , such that hair doesn't get in the way.

2) Once you start, you'll likely want to be fastidious about continuing. Three-day growth is not fun.

3) If you are predisposed to ingrown hairs, DON'T do it. You'll almost be guaranteed a saddle sore, even if the sore spot doesn't touch the saddle.

With older style chamois, it was important to have the area 'slide' against the chamois. Newer style chamois are made to move 'with' your body, so a slick surface is not as important.

You can try it, Just be aware that the re-growth period will not be fun, if you decide to stop. The area above and across the pubis is what I'm talking about here. Can you say 'sandpaper on tender parts'? So the advice is to only shave the lower parts.

OK. Now there are really no secrets on this board, are there? I tried to do this as tastefully as possible.

Good luck!

Nice answer! I don't have saddle sore issues, but was curious about it. I may have to ask one of the divers what the heck is up with it. I'm not so into things that require "upkeep" these days.

Well, I was and am curious about the practice. if I am alone, then there won't be many replies. if Dr Evil is right, the only way i'd know if there is "nothing like the feeling of a freshly shorn scrotum"...but so far there is no compelling reason to go down that path.

Gillette Fusion Power is the Chris King of razors.... there is not a better razor available. If you have never tried one.... I swear you will never go back to your old razor.

Totally helps not to have that rough sandpaper hair.
Can't afford the laser.

I recommend to try shaving.....just make sure to never compromise on the sharpness of the razor. And see if it works for you...I really don't get ingrown hairs, especially if I shave regularly. And the itching goes away after a few shaves.

If it helps one person avoid the pain and off-the-bike time of saddle sores caused by infected hair follicles? Why would you keep that secret?

Besides, I'm not sure many men could do the laser hair removal thing...even with the pain killer *and* tranqs...it's a lot like someone putting out a cigarette on every cm of your skin where you don't want the hair...and you're paying them to do it...and it takes three to six treatments (read, each treatment covers the whole area...and each treatment feels about the same...) It isn't pleasant.

But it does work.

Depends on what and where.

I went to my dermatologist rather than a hair removal place so I paid more...but I also didn't wind up with any complications.
Package prices are cheaper than a one time thing...and it takes three sessions X weeks apart to do a decent job of removal.
And really...it takes around six sessions total to make it "perfect" but I was getting in to riding season. You won't be riding for a day or four after each treatment. It is basically a burn that you're recovering from.

The process also works better for dark hair than light. But I don't have that problem.

I'll say it is pricey...but now that I've been riding several seasons without any saddle sores or weeks off the bike due to saddle sores, I'll say it was well worth the cost.

Why did this thread die?

seriously, if you have an issue with saddle sores or hairs, try the dr evil, it helped with one area where i get sore but was a pain in other areas--you do have to touch it up constantly. in truth i think the shick razor with the little wires over the blades was easy and did not cause any problems from the shave itself, but as it grows out there were areas that did seem to have a velcro effect that was unpleasant.

it's like the kids in the hall episode where the guy has to trim his nose hair daily. you can't stop once you start (or at least take 2 weeks off and then riding will be as it was)

Nobody told you, but the Navy has gone metrosexual.

You can't ask, and they can't tell.
