Is Campy really better than shi.....

Just kidding. Is there a difference in the width of Campy 9 and 10 speed individual cogs? Put another way, can you use a Campy 9 cog in a 10 speed cluster if you have the correct 10 speed spacer? I'm talking about loose cogs here, obviously.

TIA,

check the table about 2/3 the way down here (http://sheldonbrown.com/k7.html) (thanks sheldon!)

per the guru...campy 9 = 1.75mm cogs w/2.8mm spacers, campy 10 = 1.7mm w/2.42mm spacers.

so technically, not the same. practically speaking, i've never tried. anyone know if that 0.05mm is significant? i'd guess not, but YMMV.

The .05mm (.002 inch) difference is trivial, but the bigger issue with substituting cogs is the timing relative to the cogs on each side. If you're trying to create a different sequence with a smaller or larger jump, you may find it doesn't shift well. You just have to try it and see.

I tried mating the 12-15 cogs from a 12-25 with the 17-29 cogs from a 13-29 to create a 12-29, but the 15-17 shift, where the 16T was removed, didn't shift well at all.

Sounds like a question for someone like GRANT.

That's pretty much what I had in mind. Thanks all for the input.

Built a 9 speed 12-29 cassette with some loose Veloce 10 and 9 speed cogs (with no regard as to which I was using; the 29 cog was a 10 for sure...) and spacers I had around.

Works very well, medium length RD required.
This, mixed with a compact crank, makes you literally bulletproof no matter how hilly the country. If you just hate triples, that is... and are still riding 9 speed Campy.

And, surprisingly, only 60 grams more than a Chorus 12-25 10 speed cassette.

I made a 9spd cassette, using a Campy 13-23 8spd cassette, adding a 25 from a 12-25 8spd. Running this on an 8spd Campy hub. I machined the plastic Campy spacers and the 13t gear integral spacer down to give me 4.35mm Shimano 9spd index spacing. Running with 9spd Dura Ace shifters and Shimano derailleur. Works perfectly! My wife laughs at me sometimes...
