I have to admit that I hated car racing. Growing up, Dad would make me sit on the couch next to him on Sundays. He'd force me to watch the car races, black and white War movies atmo. I wanted to watch golf or go out riding my Schwinn, the car races scarred me.

Now? These past few years I am scared to admit, I like to watch the big races. Are you watching Daytona? What's your atmo?

I grew up in a Nascar family. I have been to every track in the SE back when there were more of them. My uncle owned a short track in NC and Harry Gant drove his cars for a few years early in his career. We used to have to listen to the races on AM radio, when only Daytona was on TV, prerecorded at that. Those were the good days. I still watch now, but enjoy it less.

Step on the gas and go left! Like indoor track cycling atmo.

Heck, I can only skate counter-clockwise. All those years of Pac Man, soda, hotdogs at the rink, I never could do 'backwards skate' and go nervous to find Ellen during 'couples skate' atmo. Skating counter-clockwise to Foreigner, Donna Summer, The Cars, Jackson Five, Grease, and good old days.

Hasn't F1 lost a bunch of appeal too?

When I was a kid and young adult, I really dug fast cars and auto racing, although I was always waaaay more partial to F1 than Nascar.

Now I just see the whole damn enterprise as the main symbol of stupid energy use and global warming.

stateside yes. Especially considering no USGP this year. So, Indy gets the Handmade Bike show and no F1.

As far as the sport itself, the competition was stronger last year than it has been in a while and this year looks to be even better.

Let's just say that I won't miss a single race.

I have not watched much since Senna and Prost were dueling it out. The heros used to be larger than life to me. Now they all seem like preprogramed machines. Except for a few guys, Nascar is very much like that too.

Red Bull USGP (http://www.laguna-seca.com/events/index.cfm?EventID=22) at Laguna Seca in July. Nascar is just a good excuse to nap.

This is going to be a HUGE difference ATMO. Looking forward to seeing how the drivers adjust to not having an all or none throttle.

Traction and launch control
Traction control - systems which prevent the rear wheels spinning if a driver applies too much power - are no longer permitted. This will place more emphasis on driver skill and should lead to more overtaking, as drivers are more likely to make mistakes. Similarly, systems that help the driver hold the clutch at a specific point to ensure an optimal getaway at the race start, have been outlawed.

for those that don't know, wheelspin in a 1300 pound car with 780hp is not difficult to induce.

Kimi seems to be adjusting well. He threw down a lap time in Bahrain that was over that 2 seconds faster than last year's pole time. It was just short of the race lap record and that was in '04 on a car with a V10. The more the rulemakers try to slow the cars down the more impressed I am at how fast the engineers make 'em go.

Ever since The Cutters made that big comeback victory in the 80's after taping their feet to the pedals, all subsequent races have just been dull.

 most of you are probably too young to remember, but I became a fan of racing thanks to a terrific immortal driver named Fireball Roberts. Unfortunately he raced to his death a long long time ago. If I am not mistaken, but am not sure, the walls at the NASCAR events were put up due to his crash.

One of my favorite F1 memories is a slo-mo replay during Honda's first season--the driver upshifted at the exit of a faaaast sweeper and still managed to smoke the tires. Ay caramba.

I am also glad they're reducing machine control in favor of driver control. Too much technology and not enough athlete in recent years.

It has to me....I hated to see Michael Schumacher leave.....just
don't really care anymore...even though it was interesting last year
with Kimi coming from way behind to win it all!

I guess with the McClaren boys fighting...it enabled the Fin to sip
past and win!
Still loved Massa and Alonso fighting it out from time to time!

ps...I live in Daytona and grew up at the track..but really don't care
to ever go to a race again.

I watch Indi 500 and follow some of the euro cross country races/events like Mille Miglia ( http://www.1000miglia.eu/inglese/home.html ) and some of the nostalgic sports car racing in the USA...I kinda dig seeing these guys get a little out of control in million dollar old timer cars.

Stock car racing ain't what it used to be. The cheatin' was all part of the game...now they are cheatin' but it's hard to tell. Like watching paint dry. ASC spec. racing sounds good, I have not watched enough to tell.

Want to know what really get's me going? PINKS. THAT'S RACING :)

NASCAR races resembles the World Wrestling Federation. This guy hates that guy. One guy hates his step mother. Fair play is out the window: If someone is in front of you, push his left rear get him loose, pass when he lets his foot off the accelerator. Dale Earnhart died doing that very thing. I've seen cars pressed against each other side by side as they crossed the finish trying to keep from being wrecked by the other.

Indy Car is what I watch. The open wheel and the shape of the car doesn't lend itself to allow contact between cars without consequences for both drivers. The cars are faster. Danika Patrick and Milka Duno. More racing, less smashup derby.

I am hoping the IRL and the CHAMP folks can get together and make one league again.

I like watching WRC on Speed. Asphalt, gravel, sun, rain, snow, fans silly enough to stand on the outside of hairpin corners--it's got it all.
