Talk about value (as noted in Douglas' post). Wheels are something which have me totally befuddled. When I worked in a shop, I would always tell the customer that there was a bigger difference between a $750.00 and a $1500.00 bike than there was between a $1500.00 bike and a $3,000.00 bike. Of course prices have gone up since then, but you get the general idea. Wheels seem to be in this category in a big way now. I simply can't believe how much discrepancy there is in the cost of wheels these days. Are they really trying to tell me that spending 3 or 4K on a wheelset is going to make me faster than the $1300.00 cosmics I have? Beyond that, the whole bearing thing is comical to me too. When the octalink bottom brackets came out and they had so much more resistance when spinning than the old record or previous Dura Ace bottom brackets, nothing was really said about there being a huge performance advantage, and plenty of pros were winning on them, but now we are supposed to upgrade to ceramic bearings which fit in bottom bracket systems which still don't spin as freely as the old bottom brackets? Just my $0.02. Sorry for the tangent. :)

I guess it would be cool to own an 16 pound tandem but it just seems...I dont know...wrong. I mean why? ***?

...this is confusing me. I dont like it.

It reminds me of a story when I was rowing on the crew team.

Our couch gathered us together to give us a speech to ease the tension before doing something aweful and painful. He told us, "take a good look around boys. One of you has too much money."

Low and behold, one of my teameate was wearing these special shoes that had platforms on the front so that his heels never touched the ground. I remember that they were very expensive and were supposed to give one super calf strength.

Anyways, we keeled over laughing that someone would spend so much money on something so pointless.

Good times.

I'm sure there's somebody out there that will buy a pair of the wheels. Several years back at an April ride, I got behind a couple on a titanium tandem with full Campy Record on it. That was well over 10K. Now they have the wheels to match!

So we can do what? (blink blink)

Nah, what we need is for Jack to get the lobotomy, build a custom track tandem, go to nats with me and finish dead last. It will be a glorious explosion.
