I really like Duvel, but you must be careful with it... It tastes very light and drinkable, but it's 8.5% so that bottle will knock you over.

i don't see westleteren (or however it is spelled). the 12 is the cheese, the twiz, the biz, the dongdong, tiptop, better than a footrub, better than knowing why marsellus threw tony rocky horror out a 4th story window, better than knowing who killed jr, better than knowing if obiwan was pissed when he slashed darth maul in half, better than ... you get the idea.

Darren, you know how to live!

If you like strong, try this. Great stuff but I got ambushed by it recently as I was out of practice. Training is key, but it looks like you've got that covered...

beer hates me. gives me gas and sheot. i gave it up years ago. i do have fond memories of home brewing and a short list of beers ... westletern, anchor porter / liberty ale, maredsous, lindermans ... a few i only know by sight. if they ever change the label they would be lost to me forever (not that it would matter)!

If you like Duvel you'll dig Golden Monkey too. Just recently discovered it in a Victory sampler and it's good stuff....a heck of a lot cheaper too.

If you can get your hands on it, also try some of the stuff from De Dolle brewers. I like the Oerbier, but Dulle Teve is the shizz-nizzy.

I've gone to school on the Trappist guys this winter. This is the commercially made version of the Westy 12 that is supposed to be the best in the world. http://www.ratebeer.com

This is made "down the road" or whatever...by non-monks, so it can't be called "trappist" and use that label. BUT it is killer..or should I say "a" killer. Oh my. It will make you see what ain't there if you don't share part of a large one. Good shiiite.

W CDA,

I was just about to post a question about this very beer!!!

My neighbors were out of town for a few days and asked me to pick up their mail. As a thank-you they gave me a four-pack of this. I'm not familiar with the brand and was wondering what the scoop was. I was going to take it to a Trivia Night I'm helping judge on Saturday (along with some Delirium Tremens). Are you saying that I should keep the Bernardu for myself?

In the abt 12 a four pack is good. I tried to handle a large bottle myself. The little monk knocked me on my @$$! It's very, very good, but moderation, and some good food with it, is key.

Do you like the fruity bouquet and delicate finish with hints of raspberry too?

So, if there’s a beer snob plaguing your life, simply relax, grit your teeth and realize that it’s just a passing phase. Instead of getting annoyed, do what I do now that I’m a "reformed" beer snob: sit back, drink your Amstel Light, and smile knowingly as they grimace, choking down yet another pint of Guinness with their buffalo wings.

YOUR TURN

saab2000
02-06-2008, 08:44 PM
My turn.

Here's tonight's taste test.

Erdinger Hefe-Weizen vs. Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat

First impressions of the Leini's:

- Looks like wheat beer should look. More or less. Not quite cloudy enough, but not bad. Not all wheat beers need to be so dark and opaque.

- Doesn't foam too well and form a good head. Somewhat lame there.

- Actually does have a fruit taste. Not totally offensive, but not real either. Fruit doesn't belong in beer.

PS - The glasses are from the Stuttgarter Hoffbräu which I used to visit when I worked in Switzerland. Stuttgart was one of our destinations in Germany and I loved going into town and trying the beer. I am breaking one of the cardinal rules of German Bier drinking by putting beer other than the proper brand into the glass, but they are the only wheat beer glasses I have, so we'll have to live with it.

Report on the Erdinger to follow.

Not that there's actually too much suspense.....

Had some of the Dogfish pale ale and gave it away. Definitely not to my taste. Another local brewery (<100 miles) is River Horse. Before moving down to the shore we lived just on the other side of town from the brewery. Excellent brews: http://www.riverhorse.com/

Erdinger = Record, with Nucleon tubulars and Veloflex tubies on an open road, all screwed onto a proper-geo lugged steel frame, on a summer afternoon riding near the Bodensee.
Leinenkugel's = Centaur, bolted to a welded steel frame in southwestern WI, just south of Chippewa Falls, where this is brewed, on a summer afternoon into evening. Maybe near La Crosse..

IOW, both good. The Leini's is not without merit. But I would do without the fake orange taste they seem to put into it. Otherwise, for half the price of the Erdinger it's not bad at all.

My dad would never accept this verdict, being of the opinion that anything from the old country is better than anything from the new, even if it is from Wisconsin brewed by the long lost cousins from the old country... But if Germany was so great why did Oma and Opa leave..... :D

Actually we're about to move, so I suppose it wouldn't do you much good! I hear that Redbones in Cambridge, MA actually serves Westy 12 for $9/bottle when in stock, which is an incredibly good price, all things considered.

Darren, I have to thank you for the Tripel Karmeliet recommendation. At dinner tonight I started with one of those (which was excellent), followed by an Urtel Hibernus Quentum (a funky triple, but good, 9%). I capped off the meal with a De Dolle Stille Nacht, which I've been looking forward to trying for quite a while. It's a solid 12% and after the first two beers it definitely put me in the "ok, I'm done" category. Great beers all, but the Karmeliet takes the cake for sure. I will be stocking up on that one for sure.

I like the sunset wheat, so I'll have to try the other one.

I just cleaned out Rite Aid. They had Sam Adams White Ale 12 packs on sale for $12.99 so I picked up 3 packs. I know for most of you guys that's a lot but on the remote island of Manhattan, we don't get a lot of shipments. Oh wait, that's another remote island. Our beer is so damned expensive because the 12 pack takes up about sits on $500 per sq. ft. per month of retail space (I have no clue if that figure is true but it sounds adequately high to me).

I'm geographically biased, but I haven't seen any Japanese brews posted so far. I've sort of tired of all the micro-brew craze in the US, they don't do much for me after being here for a couple of years. You can always count on a Sapporo tasting good, especially if you want something lighter and crisper.

They also do malt-based beers well, my favorite here is called Ebisu. It is Japan's oldest brewery I think. Not sure if you can get it in the states.

Close. It's actually from Newport, OR, which is on the coast south of Portland. This weekend I had a pint of something they call Hop Heaven - wet hopped with Newport (apparently somewhat rare) hops and unfiltered. Stunning beer and strangely enough the aromatics and flavor made me think of gewurztraminer wine: lots of grapefruit and roses. Worth a visit if you are in OR.

Darren that killer Penguin look swell! Where is it brewed? I'm drinking good old Sam Adams Boston Lager and it's really good. I forgot just how good it is! Reminds me of a long time ago.

I definitely recommend Duck Rabbit's amber ale and the milk stout. They brew from North Carolina
