Who makes/sells a useful tool for holding the nut on a chainring bolt? I can usually get them to tighten up enough without even using a tool, but a couple of the nuts/bolts on one bike (with Campy Chorus square taper alloy crank) just spin. I've got the lame tool that sort of looks like a can opener, but it's nearly useless. Does anyone ever resort to using a tiny amount of epoxy to secure the nut?

I'd have to agree that the special tool for this is less than terribly effective... in a pinch, in the past I have used a large bladed screwdriver.

But, knock on wood, I haven't had problems with the bolts loosening.

Some Loctite might be a good idea, I'd probably hold off on the epoxy.

Marcus you can spend lots of money on a fancy tool or follow prev. post suggesting you resort to a large screwdriver thru the opposite side if need be. In all the yrs. I've never needed more than either the cheesey tool shimano supplies or a big screwdriver. OK welllll sometimes I have to drill the sukr's out but that's an entirely diff. matter.

Lifu make the best tool for this. It's a screwdriver but the end is the correct peg spanner shape to sit in and hold the chainring bolt nut.

You can get them here:

or you can always splurge and get one of these:

And then there's the classic VAR tool:

Hope that helps.

You know, I want to say my Ritchey WCS compacts came with double-sided hex heads for chainring bolts.

I got to think this is one of the most helpful simple changes I've come across in a long dang time.

I thought that I had seen this design (double hex heads) before. The slotted nut setup is one design I've never understood.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I've used a variety of screwdrivers in the past, as well as the lame tool that I currently own; I was just hoping for something a bit better. I think the Lifu screwdriver is going to be the next addition to the toolbox. I was (half) joking about the epoxy. :D

I'd agree. That Lifu screwdriver will save you way more than $4.50 in new swear words...
