Will be heading to Reno on Sat for a few days. Have been considering renting a car, but not sure what the driving conditions would be like. Being from the deep South, have plenty of experience of driving in rain, but not snow, sleet, etc. Was thinking of doing the drive around Lake Tahoe. Been there once years ago and remember it was a really spectacular drive. But that was without snow.

Anything else worth seeing/doing while there?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Weather-wise - it's luck of the draw. This past weekend I think a lot of those roads were closed or required chains. If the weather is good that area is gorgeous. In the old days the best skiing I've ever done in nearby Squaw Valley.

Lived here for four years after ten in Chicago...

Weather
We've been getting snow all week here. It snows all night and melts during the day. The local ski resort http://www.mtrose.com/ got two feet over the weekend! Definitely a great winter if your a skier. I've already gotten in eight days including two in the powder!

Gambling
Most locals stay away from it. If your interested I'd go to the Peppermill or the Atlantis over downtown....

Other good stuff
Definitely drive up to Tahoe if you haven't been there. If weather is bad then get a SUV. Take 431 and drive to Tahoe City then over to Truckee on 89. Have some breakfast at the Squeeze In.
If you want a little wild west then drive up to Virginia City. The 4th Ward Schoolhouse museum is interesting. The Mark Twain Bookstore is also pretty good. As an added bonus, Geiger Grade up to Virginia City is supposedly LeMond's teenage training route
Harrahs Natl. Automotive Museum in DT Reno is worth a stop if you are a car fanatic. One mans amazing personal collection of cars.
Finally, if you are skier then you are coming at the right time of the year! If not then consider a lesson and a day on the slopes!

Local cycling stuff
Stop by and see Roland Della Santa. He'll talk your ear off. Don't mention carbon. http://www.dellasanta.com/
Go down to Minden and get fitted by Paul Taylor. http://www.taylorbicycles.com/

Maybe buy a lugged steed while you are there.

When I was in Reno I rented a car and drove up to Carson City. Very interesting little town (even though it's the state capital) with beautiful old pioneer style wooden houses and lots of green spaces. I loved my day in Carson City! Also second the idea of driving up to Virginia City and poking around in the old mining museum. And of course getting over to Tahoe if weather conditions permit. Beautiful views even if you never get out of your car.
