View Full Version : 31.8mm bars
31.8mm bars- good idea or bad? Seems to me like an idea akin to the 1.25" steerer but that's me. I'm a little slow on the uptake.

My theory:
With alloy bars down to 200 grams, component makers simply couldn't make bars any lighter. The component makers knew that *sane* bars should weigh around 240-260 grams (or more), but they also knew that after marketing "lighter, lighter" for years, no one would buy them. What to do? Sell 240-260 gram bars, but with a gimmicky bulge in the center, and market them as "extra stiff" bars.

So why did everyone switch from a 1" steerer to 1" 1/8, if it was gimmicky the 1" 1/4 would have stuck around longer.
