When you do the crossmo with the roadmo, what changes do you make with your components and wheelmos. Also, how long do your bikemos last when you race them. Seasons? Years? Just wondering when today everything today seems so specialized. Thanks.

ss/fixie cross bike with S&S couplers

pretty randoneurrish friction shifting lugged bike with fenders

ti road bike with really stable geometry -- probably my favorite of them all

aluminum road bike with more aggressive geometry

For me, the limiting factor (aside from finances) is this weird feeling of being overextended if I've any more to attend to, like I can't keep up with the maintenance, and none of them feel 'finished' or really ready to ride.

Oddly, although its the most practical bike with wide tires, fenders, and wide range gears, the rando-ish bike gets the fewest miles. (This probably just means I haven't taken a long enough trip yet to warrant it.)

Cheers.

Carrera Shield - The "A" Ride/Go Fast Bike... and the fit? Think Arthur and Excalibur

Serotta Club Special - Will be rebuilt shortly and will split saddle time with the Carrera. It was most assuredly the best fitting bike I have ever ridden... until the Carrera. It has been disassembled since its challenger hit the stable so some back to backs will be in order to re-establish pecking order. Plus, it is getting a compact and 28c tires, so it should be silly comfortable and fun to ride.

Bianchi Reparto Corsa Cross - great bike, and looks beautiful... but now that cross season is over, it is the urban assault bike. Good to take on not so perfect roads, over train/trolley tracks, up/down curbs... whatever. Great for rides around downtown Memphis.

Schwinn 9 (five) - my only MTB. since I can count the number of off road rides per year on one hand, it remains semi-permanantly attached to the kid trailer. Geared to pull stumps... it is nice going up hills with my sons. ;) Maybe I should convert it?? http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/bik/539993989.html

1984 Trek 660 racing bike. Lugged, Reynolds 531. Painted twice, rusted, pinholes in the tubes, parts replaced many times. Since I'm not commuting to work anymore, this has become my main ride. I'm trying to kill this thing so I can replace it, but it just won't die. I should be careful what I wish for; I just might get it.

Circa 1997 Bilenky Signature Clubsman, fillet brazed steel. Replaced my other Clubsman, which was stolen. Sport touring bike w/fenders, rack, generator lights, barends. If I had only one bike, this would be it. Just fun to ride, easy handling.

Circa 2004 steel, Salsa Ala Carte ATB w/rigid fork. My mountain biking/R2D2 tool of choice. First/last of the American-made Ala Carte's.

Since I'm not racing anymore, I sometimes think I could pare down to two bikes; I feel ashamed to own so many. Other times, I find the racing bike "useful".

I find it interesting that with over 600 views, only 80 something voted.....

how hard is it to "push a button"???????

Ray
01-28-2008, 06:26 AM
I have two road bikes (both Spectrum), one "faster" one with skinny tires, slightly tighter geometry, etc that really likes to be pushed as hard as I can push it (which isn't very, but its a really fun ride). One more relaxed one with fenders, barcons, couplers, a Brooks, slightly fatter tires, that I can ride on lots of terrain at whatever speed I feel like (and am capable of). Any touring / travel happens on this one. These bikes get 90% of my miles at LEAST.

I have a townie (Bleriot) and a fixie (Rambouillet) that I ride reasonably often, but not for long rides. The townie never goes more than 5-10 miles at a time. The fixie rarely more than 20-30 and more often the same kind of 5-10 mile trips the townie gets used for. I also have a Brompton folder that I only use when I need to drop a car off for repairs or sometimes when I take the train into the city and have a lot of stuff to do there beyond walking distance. Or if I'm traveling to a new place and just want something to knock around on.

So, two heavy users, and three that fill light roles. I periodically buy a mountain bike, never ride it, and sell it for lack of use. I'm currently without and will probably stay that way. Although Saturday I took a hike with my wife and dog in a place I used to ride a lot and the conditions were SO FRIGGIN' PERFECT for riding that I started thinking it would be good to have one again. But I know what would happen, so I'm gonna be strong. For a while.

Serotta Legend road 2001 . . . "The Queen Bee"

Fisher Hoo-Koo-E-Koo 1995 . . . "M.T. Bee"

Redline Conquest cross bike (late 90's) put together out of parts . . . "Frankenbee"

Vitus road (1984) . . . No name, set up as kind of a TT bike, but has been hanging in the basement unused for a couple of years. The geometry is just not right for TT.

Specialized Langster fixie special "Chicago Edition" . . . Don't quite have this in hand yet. Just bought it on eBay. It's got a pic of the Chi-Town skyline on the top tube with a portrait of Al Capone and the "L" in Langster has been crossed out and replaced with a "G" so it reads "G-angster." Still got to figure out a name . . . "Gangsta Bee?"

There may be other additions. I've been restless lately . . .

Only two these days:

Surly Karate Monkey singlespeed for off-road high jinks
Merckx MX Leader for daily commuting and tarmac-based riding

I have a custom Robin Mather lugged Audax / Rando / commuting bike on order, ETA March. It'll be the full works - frame, forks, custom stem and rack. I'm envisaging that it'll replace the Merckx for most of the daily work, so I can put some lighter kit on the Merckx for distances <100k. If we have space for three bikes, that is...

I too would like to see the Grandis. A buddy just bought one from Lou Deeter.

Thanks in advance.

OK, OK ...

This is all I have at the moment. For some reason, my Kodak digital camera makes it look blue, but trust that it's really purple. There's a little bit of orange on the top side of the downtube, and being the tacky guy that I usually am, decided to exploit it with some of accessories. I'll try to post more to the gallery so you can see the pantographed stem and proprietary lugs, crown, etc.

the hope is a custom build that i should be getting by the end of next month which i hope is as good as people say it should be

I think we need to see some better pictures of those forsaken beauties :)

Really? Its too embarassing...all the cobwebs and deflated tires. Shameful, actually...

Maybe in a month or so one of these may get elevated to rider status.

Wow!

Spoke's list makes mine look like nothing!

'96 CSI Shimangolo mix
'90-ish Fausto Coppi steel - Campy C-Record
'8? Trek 960 Singletrack to beat myself up on in the winter woods

They all get ridden - CSI is the main ride, the Coppi is the winter road bike and the Trek is for when it's too cold out to ride the road.

New custom steel is on the way.

1) Della Santa w/record 10. Deda zero tubing fore and aft-sweet stuff.
2) Yamaguchi w/chorus 9. S3 tubing w/sloping TT and carbon fork. I consider this my bullet bike.
3) Calfee Luna tri w/centaur 10. Soon to be built for tri's.

I signed up for the Columbia, MD OD Tri this May. So excited. However, the Uncle decided my time this summer will best be served in one of the 2 Asian wars we are currently involved in. So,....

4) Bridgestone 500. 1985. beat/disgusting. It rides my computrainer.

Still looking for--CSi, road logic, Moser leader AX, Derosa neo pro, spectrum steel.

I do ride 55's. I can also tell you that as a member of our country's military you'd be welcome to ride any bike in the collection. Be sure to drop me a note when you get settled.
