Pristine.

Absolutely not a mark on it.

Tag on the steer tube matches the BB.

I just don't think there is a way ( that I know ) to get decent colour pics in the house.

Classic. Build it with era-appropriate Campagnolo Nuovo Record or Campagnolo Super Record and you've got a *keeper* on your hands. Very nice bike. :)

Thundercats, Mtv, Atari 2600, Sunkist soda commercials, Dukes of Hazzard, Beastmaster, Valley Girl, Miami Vice and magenta paint on bikes. :)

And re-runs of this:

The two shades of purple really make it. Classy.

. . . but it's always cool to find something like that in cherry shape.

BTW, does Viper have a job, or does he just sit at home and watch youtube all day? Or is he secretly one of it's founders? ;)

Classic. To go retro or modern with the bits? That is the question.

Whole rear triangle is chrome too.

Makes my heart go all pitter patter .............

I have some Alloy Chorus 10 speed, never used, sitting in a box around here somewhere - I'm thinking that, and some SSC's with a 24 or 25 tubular and it'll be a lot of fun.

A cool 1980's frame deserves cool 1980's components....well maybe except for the pedals! I would even opt for exposed brake cables for a sharp-looking throwback.

It needs the new Dura Ace electric gruppo. Then you can call it "Electric Boogaloo"

I think it's an early 90's frame...

just sayin'

/\/\ Certainly a distinct possibility. Contact the folks at Gita Bike (http://www.gitabike.com/cgi-bin/shop/merckx_loadhome.cgi?user_id=25990&file=merckx.html) to see how they might help regarding the history of this sweet bicycle.

Yeah, I think it is - but the paint and the chrome - is just so '80's.

I'd hang:

Late 80's Mavic SSC groupo
Selle Turbo saddle
Those Ambrosio Nemisis rims someone told me about...
Cinelli Model 65 Crit bars and 1/a stem

I might still have some neon green Grip Shift somewhere in a box....

Eddy Merckx frames of that era definitely were attractive due to the various color schemes offered, yours included. Apparently, Merckx has fired his style department because nothing pretty has come out, since.

Same goes for Trek, Specialized, etal. Everyone is merely interested in how large they can make their downtube so they can put a larger logo on there.
How gauche.

...They've moved on to interior decorating, fashion design....and saddle design....

Grants got it right,,,,
This brochure is dated 1990,, color is the same purple,,,(looks a bit blue here)
Mercks probably went to the chrome fork and stays in 91 to add a bit more zinggg!
C-Record w/ Deltas was the look back then. I love the Regal saddle.

I know it's totally passe in today's carbon fiber and black is the new black styling world, but there is something very cool about chrome accents on a bike.

I love the chromed rear triangle, but the fully chromed fork looks a little generic to me. A fork with the lower half of the blades chromed, and the upper half painted is pure 80's 90's BLING!

Cheers!

Mine was already well used when I got it 5 years ago. Since then it has lived as a fixed gear commuter, trainer hump and daily rider. The finish may be scratched and chipped but it still gets compliments. Those Belgiums knew how to lay on the paint.

As for the jaws of death, the other posters must have too much carbon on the brain; SLX tubing is sturdy stuff.

mister

and you can adjust how tightly the tube is clamped with most stands right?
