Is it true that wooden frames have a "carbon fiber" feeling?

Sweet project. Outstanding work, especially for a young person.

I don't really care for woodworking myself...

Now WHAT was I doing in HS? The usual: playing guitar, dressing funky, sneaking beers, chasing skirt...

WAIT A MINUTE-- that's what I'm doing NOW!

'Cept now, I'm not in the band, funky is functional, sneaking beer is a state of training, the skirts are less giggly, and I ride a bike. :bike:

All this talk of skirt chasing. I can tell that most of you folks are pretty old if you remember high-school so fondly and/or thought you were pretty cool.

I tell you what, the cool kids in my highschool cannot, and never will be able to afford a fancy bike. At best, they can sevice my car, clean the highway, and bag my groceries.

Given the affluence I have witnessed on this board, I got a feeling that a lot of you were doing this:

Oh, and I forgot to mention that the wooden creation is pretty amazing. I certainly did not have close to that kind of talent or drive at that age.

I guess I was too busy chasing skirts! :D

Very smart kid and a very impressive project. I hope he finds himself in the bicycle framebuilding business someday!

After the '47 Plymouth that I bought at age 15 and shared with my twin, I bought a '61 VW bug. Drove the bug stock for a few months, then bought a '64 Corvair and merged the two together. I put the entire rear suspension, engine and transmission from the Corvair into the bug. I goofed around with this car for several years. Before I retired the car, I had graduated high school, went to work in a chrome shop and the result is pictured in black and white. I chromed everything I could, including the firewall and muffler. I was running 27psi on the turbocharger. My goal was to get the car up to 160 mph, but about the best I could do was 140 - predetonation set in, even with an alcohol/water injection setup. Seatbelts? Not in those days.

I was the quintessential nerd -- all I was missing was the beanie with the propeller on it. Cheerleaders....HA! My nerdiness was all book knowledge though -- I wish it had been about something more practical like what this kid is doing. If he ends up in the bike business, I hope it's because he loves it. Othewise, it sounds like he's grounded enough and mature enough to do well at whatever he puts his hand to.

In High School ... er, let's just say there's a fair bit that I don't recall.

I think I saw Deep Purple the night before my chemistry mid-term in 10th grade. You know, celebrating the tail end of our nation's bicentennial, that kind of thing.

In high school, went to all my classes...especially math and science...ran track...flirted with girls...basically did nothing remarkable. Went to an engineering school in NC. The kids there were way smarter than me...they had all been building cars and stuff in high school and all their life...and were driving around in big engine fords and gtos. They knew their stuff. Changed my major...transferred to another school and became an accountant. These days ride the train and ride my bike. No regrets, but have a lot of respect for engineers.

Man, I dunno, I don't even remember the name of the homecoming queen but the most hapless social outcasts in my high school (class of 1978) were not the brightest kids in school and the kids who were admitted to the most competitive colleges were not, by and large, stereotypical D&D geeks (I mean, I'm not even sure if that particular game was around at the time, but the whole pocket-protector, zero dates thing wasn't really the model) -- really, the large majority of kids in my public high school went to college and I imagine that most of them did fine.
