I just heard from my LBS that Shimano will be offering two new Dura Ace gruppos in the second half of 2008: an electronic version (finally...not that I want it though) and a new gen 10-speed that will include their carbon crank. Has anyone heard anything else? I'm curious if either one will include more carbon than just the crank.

Saw artist rendition of the new Dura-Ace carbon crank.
Electronic shifter was in testing phase, but who knows when it will make it to regular production.

The half-dozen imperfections that are on the one in the photo are quite disappointing for Dura-Ace and also for what it's likely going to cost. My guess is $600+. If I were in the market for one, I would buy a Zipp. They have been doing these for over 10 years and do it well.

Remember when $1400 for a frame was alot of money? Good thing other options are out there beside the big two and new one now. It may get to the point that the only "S" or "C" thing I own will be shifters?

the Zipp Vumaquad crank, with ceramic BB, is $1250 from Competitive Cyclist. the Vumaquad crank and ceramic BB weigh 570g. not only does the carbon DA crankset weigh 709g, it costs $150 more.

edit: and if you don't mind downgrading to steel bearings, the Zipp crank can be had for about $1000. wow! that's a bargain!

of course, the Zipp crank does need proprietary (4 bolt) chainrings.

The only thing I find FUGLY is the price. I like the look of it's carbon fiber much better than that particle board look of Campy.

I have 2 hopes with this...

First I hope all the people who must have the newest, latest bits of kit will be buying this stuff up and put all their old D/A 7800 bits on ebay.

Second I hope Shimano comes out with a shifter with those neat looking LCDs on top of the hoods as gear indicators but with a normal, mechanical, cable based linkage. Then I'd be putting my shifters & Flightdeck stuff on ebay and buying a Edge 705.

Take the Shimano Electro-Deck, Garmin 705 GPS/HRM and iPhone
and your coach can shift for you from his easy chair.

In a split second I've come to embrace cutting edge japanese bicycle technology. That said, the easy chair is a fat-a$$ american invention, and I'm gonna need something at least 40" wide with holders for the iPhone, the TV remote, my beer, a pizza and a refrigerated section for a couple pints of Ben & Jerry's.
