Smiley, if you don't want to have them ground down, you still only have to futz with them once. Go ahead and install the wheel the way you like. Then open the quick release lever, hold it, and twist the cap on the other side three full revolutions. That should be open plenty. If not, do one more. Now the wheel will pop right off. Guess how many turns it will take to tighten back up. Now that you know, it should take less than a second to either loosen or tighten past the tabs.

You could still have them taken off if you want -- and you'll have slightly faster wheel changes with strange wheels, as in racing, which you don't do -- it's just that it's not that big a deal to leave them on if you know how many turns it takes. Frankly, I kind of like them -- not for safety on the bike, but for security on roof racks, as it's easier to feel when it's seated.
