My training wheels, which are also race spares, have tan sidewalls (Veloflex Pave).

Is writing your name on the sidewall - like Sven Nys (http://bp3.blogger.com/_nhTxq79ZguM/Rb54gguVUwI/AAAAAAAAAQw/kNmrS5KGfD8/s1600-h/Worlds-Elite-nys-tire.jpg) - PRO? Or, is it too Euro for any midwesterner to pull off?

I used to use a sharpie to write my name on the sidewalls. Everyone on the team also put the team name on their sidewalls. Any team wheel was free game when you rolled into the wheel pit.

It is a very sharp cosmetic touch. How do you think it's done? Silkscreened, perhaps? The lettering is perfect.

FMB screens those onto his tires for him, just like the championship colors. You can get FMBs with championship colors for three or four countries (I've seen Belgian, German, Dutch, and French -- though I don't know why French since I can't think of a good French crosser). They do it before the tires are stitched up so they're not having to work on as much of a curved surface.

The ones with his name on them are typically custom treads stripped from other tires. I was in Francois' shop and saw some in process. This gentleman is a little more into bling than Andre was.

What works really well if you want to print your tires is to get a pad of fabric ink (which is truly permanent) and have a rubber stamp made. With a graphics software program you can actually lay the type on a curve that matches the tire diameter. Just provide a printout to a rubber stamp shop and you'll have one for about $15-20. Don't make it too big -- Sven has a nice short name to work with. Stamp the tire, lightly inflated, while you still have clean fabric casing exposed, then coat everything with Aquaseal or Seamseal. Looks quite pretty. You can do something similar on black road tires if you use a vinyl or urethane varnish mixed with gold powder -- you get nice gold lettering on the black sidewall and the stuff doesn't peel off (other finishes we've tried just peel off road tires that already have black coating on the fabric). Hint: don't make the font too bold -- this actually works better if the lettering is lighter.

put eddy merckx on yr spare wheels.

no body will touch them.

it simplifies the pit area which can get somewhat chaotic during races... and helps to keep the few unscrupulous from going away with wheels that belong to somebody else " by mistake"

You write your name on the downtube, too, I see. I dunno. Seems a bit egotistical, maybe.

Hmm. If I ever run into either Dario Pegoretti or some guy named Serotta, there could be trouble...
