View Full Version : Conti GP 4000 'Chili'?

I'm in need of some new tires, and some of the mail order houses have the Conti GP 4000 Chili (!). Does anyone know if there is really any difference between these and the 'regular' Conti GP 4000?

"With the new Black Chili Compound rolling resistance is reduced by 26%, grip is increased by 30% and mileage is increased by 5%."

Marketing BS?

I'm just looking to replace my current GP 4000's, so is there any reason that I should/shouldn't order these 'chili's' if the price is right?

Many thanks!

Joel

I've got some waiting to be installed once I use up my current stock of GP-4000's. If they are as good as the current gp - 4000 I'll be satisfied. If they live up to the specs from the CONTI site I'll be very happy.
I got the " S " version with the silver logo. Looks cool too.

Joel, I was very satisfied with my Continental GP 4000 purchases and even more satisfied with my subsequent Continental GP 4000S acquisitions. If we're talking only a few dollars, opt for the upgraded tires. Enjoy! :)

Joel,

I just put 50+ miles on a new pair of 4000s' on Saturday. The ride started on the flats in great dry and warm 60 degree day. It finished with a steep climb and descent in 40 degree rain. They roll fast on the flats and gripped unbelievably on the way down the mountain. Two thumbs up. Better than the old stand by Conti 4000 and worth the extra few dollars. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Chris

I've never really understood the "less rolling resistance but more grip" thing. It seems like you can't have one without the other. I can understand "lighter, yet stronger" or even "tastes great, less filling" but tire manufacturers have been making the less resistance with more grip claim for a long time.

If their claims of each 30% improvement were true I should be able to race around an oiled, rain-soaked ninety degree corner at 30 mph while getting 78,000 miles on the same set of tires.

Let us know how that worked for you. :D

I saw them last week at the bike shop and they "look" good. Not to mention, they are at least 100gms lighter than the tire I have on my bike now. That's gotta be good for at least 1/100th of a mile faster speed per watt.

The black 4000s and the 4000s w/black chili compound are the same tire despite the different labels. They both cost the same. It's too much work and cost for conti to change the rubber mix so all the black tires get the chili mixed in.

I replaced the wire bead 28c Gatorskins that came on my tandem with gp-4000 in 25c and WAS a real noticable difference taking 100 grams off each wheel. Rides and roll much better too= faster over the same routes.

the tires I have vs the Black Chili.

Hutchinson Quartz = 360g
Conti GP4000S = 198g

maybe that explains why an old lady on a 3spd passed me the other day.

I'm going to pick up some new tires Saturday, that's it.
