Sure, we'll set up in your garage.

it wont be in Boston anytime soon, sorry.

Ok, all sarcasm aside, NAHBS has specific needs as a show.
1 of which is affordable rooms. Frankly speaking, Boston has 1 of the highest room rates I have seen while planning this show.
The second issue is a hall that is affordable and non-union. I dont mean to pick on the unions, but most of our exhibitors are starving framebuilders and can't afford to spend an additional 500-1k just to have someone else haul in their stuff.

It all boils down to the finances. If I cant afford it, neither can the rest of the builders. Thats my measuring tape.

Ok 4 years west coast, 4 years east coast, 4 years midwest . Midwest means (at least to me) about a 2 states wide on either side of the Mississippi and north of the Mason Dixon to Canada. Of course I'm just a spectator, you guys are the ones the masses come to see. Hope you all have a great show.

it'll be a great show even if it's held in a phone booth in
iceland atmo. personally, i'd like to see it reigned in a hair
and be representative of the framebuilding industry rather
than including the fringe and part timers, but i think the
genie is out of the bottle. regardless, a show for and about
high-class, refined bicycles is cool, and everyone who eschews
mediocrity should support it atmo. my concern is the parity
for the exhibitors who have logged all the plane miles prior
to the 09 gig. i miss the atlantic atmo.

Well, some folks need an alternative when they realize you have a 10 year wait list :p

But in all seriousness, the more the merrier. At the end of the day, superior craftsmanship will shine through, and folks like yourself, Kirk, Sacha, etc. will still be the envelope pushers. You guys worked a lot harder to get where you are today without the benefit of becoming an "overnight sensation" because of some award at a bikeshow and it'll show. And if the show is gonna grow, as I'm sure DW hopes it will, we've all got to be a little more inclusive than exclusive. We'll save the "elitest, bike-nerd coterie" stuff for this here forum :D

We have considered Charlotte, G'boro and Raleigh.
Farther south, we looked at Charleston, Savannah and Atl.
Even farther, Jacksonville and Orlando (Yuck!)

The problem we keep running into is "our" time of year is already booked for 2 years out. It leaves us with just a couple of options.

DW

01-05-2008, 02:40 PM
I you haven't already, you should speak with the leadership at Gita. With Pegoretti being one of their main builders, I'm sure they would help facilitate the show coming to Charlotte. Several of the builders and attendees who have attended Cirque du Cyclisme in Greensboro would be familiar with the general area. Atlanta and Orlando are almost too big and commercial if you ask me.

Anyone run a show on the East Coast? Most viable locations you would have to pay unions to carry your frames into the show space -- not allowed to hand-carry displays even if they are under the UCI limit. You'd have to pay a union electrician to run electricity to your booth. You'd probably arrive short a frame because it disappeared out of the loading dock. Don or somebody would have to pay off one or more questionable types. Most staff working the facility would have to be paid union scale. The mob either steals or extorts in nearly every city. In short, the East Coast is horrible for running shows. There's a reason why Outdoor Retailer, Interbike, Housewares, Sports, and practically every other show except for a couple of the auto and electronics shows now steer clear of the Northeast and book Vegas, Moscone, McCormick, and the rest. Plus, a bunch of custom framebuilders are big news in Portland but in most northeastern cities you'd get lost in the general noise level.

I totally sympathize with the East Coasters who'd like to have a show closer to home, plus I agree (at least in part) with the perspective of keeping this as an intimate and high-end show focusing on the builders. I'm interested how many builders coming to Portland are people I've never heard of. But, I don't think people will be as happy if the convention cost is 3-5 times as much, food and housing are so much higher, and one has all the problems alluded to above.

For several years I ran a major corporate division that made the rounds of most convention locations in the US, large and small. We had special terms to describe the northeastern sites. Perhaps Don can start getting on the schedule for one of the Texas sites -- keep it close to home for him, plus offer somewhat more reliable weather, better riding, possibly a track, and so on. Interbike will have six-day racing next year so what about NAHBS 2009?

I wanted to have a mini 6 in 09, but $$$ strapped and no heavy hitting sponsors stepping up puts the kabosh on that.
As far as what you are saying on the Unions, you hit the nail on the head.
We have been small and off the radar to most folks, but now I heard rumors that we'll have serious issues real soon with unions. I cannot go into it, but I will say that what happens in Vegas goes throughout the country.

I'm not sure I follow. If the point of having the show in the East is so people
from the East can attend, the costs associated with traveling to the show is
less, not more.

1,000's of attending people have to fly across the country so a few builders
save on food? Why don't they just save the airfare, and mail $100 each
to the builders to pay their costs of putting on the show, instead of hundreds
for an airline ticket.

The show should be located where the target of the population for the attendees is...
the show's cost model doesn't factor in the cost for the attendees
of the show, that's where the cry for an eastern show comes from...

But there is no 50 yard line at the San Francisco Giants stadium. It's a baseball field :p

And I do empathize with your plight. I was just looking for a good segue to use the phrase "Indy Fabulous".

I have to travel to SoCal to attend Comic-Con and Indianapolis to attend GenCon. What sucks about these events is that they don't roam. There's never a chance of them coming to SF. NAHBS hasn't pitched it's tent yet. I'm sure the East Coast framebuilders (and just as importantly the East Coast attendees!) will get their own show soon enough. I've been very fortunate to have this one show in my backyard the last 2 years.

East, West, North or South, I'll still be attending.

Yes, it's time for this show to hit the northeast! I also vote for Providence, Worcester, Springfield, Hartford, or Albany! I don't know much about it, but Hartford, CT has a brand new Convention Center. Oh, and there's a brewery w/i walking distance too. Heck, the all new Science Center will be complete by next year (I hope) and it's smack next door to the CC, so bring your kids! Icing on the cake is that a Marriot is built into the CC. There, done deal! :D

Albany and Schenectady have some very affordable rooms. Central location. Good beer. Right on the Thruway--very accessible. Within easy driving distance of Twizzler Central.

Just sayin' . . . ;)

BBD

Albany is central to what? The SUNY system? Half way between Rutland and Utica?

I mean, no offense -- I've got some really good friends in the area, it's close to the Addies and Saratoga Springs, and I like upstate NY, but it's not on the way to much of anything and winter up there can really be winter (which is not necessarily convenient for gathering folks from far and wide on schedule). I am, as the kids are just sayin', just sayin'...

For a smaller town accessible to larger ones, I would think that something like Harrisburg, PA could work. It's got a real airport, and it's an easy drive from NY, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Washington, DC, which means both the large numbers of people in those cities and their major airports. I dunno about union issues, but things there generally are inexpensive. Nearby towns like Herhey and Carlisle have managed enthusiast shows of various sorts (like autos).

It seems to me that the show ought to move around, if only to expose builders to different populations. I'm sure that there are people -- consumers, that is -- who will fly here, there, or wherever, to see such a show, but my guess is that many enthusiasts are less enthusiastic than that, and that the builders would benefit from a more varied selection. I could be wrong, and it's not my show of course, but that's my best guess.

This is not exactly the case. We have fewer exhibitors from back east than anywhere else, that is true. We also have issues with locations already being booked 2 years out. NAHBS is headed east, but not "on" the coast for 09.

I don't know what all of the union business is about in the Northeast. I have been point person for setting up booths for my former employer at shows in Fitchburg, MA, Norwood, MA, Worcester. MA and Hartford, CT and I don't remember getting any help from any union people. My lower back certainly doesn't remember. One was at the DCU Center in Worcester and they certainly didn't help.

How about if we compromise and invade Quebec as part of an oil-for-cheese conspiracy? Our boys will bring home a taste for hockey and poutain and berets and the Quebecoise will have a new national holiday to rally around - Jour de l'Invasion. We'll give them more SUVs and teach them to parler about "freedom" en anglaise.

atmo there are frame buyers everywhere and they will
travel to the event no matter where it is. you bring up
the point of nahbs being as important for the atendees
as for the exhibitors. well that is the fkucing conundrum
atmo. one certainly does need the other, but nahbs was
organized as a way for f'builders to share time with each
other, trade resources, and form alliances. now it seems
like a mini trade show, and much of it is comprised of
entities that are not full time or career f'builders. and
then there are the fringe exhibitors who are invited so
you all won't be bored by looking at only just hand built
frames. i would like to know the mission statement and
long term goals for the show. zmatta fact, i have no idea

Its under control. I speak, at great length, to my site services person weekly about locations ranging from Florida to Mass. and what we are experiencing is that they dont have availability for Feb/March. I have even started looking into April/May as time frames and still, they are all booked 2 years out.
Now, that being said, I am working on 10-11. I know the Worcester city has a brand new CC and hotels nearby. We are just trying to see if they have the dates for us and hotel availability.

I had a thought about Toronto...but I dont know that it would be feasable for us...maybe my site people can clue me in.

unsolicited opinion -
nahbs business should be conducted on the nahbs
forum, and issues regarding nahbs policy should be
hashed out by exhibitors. as it stands, the nahbs
forum is not making use of itself as an online board
where all who pay to exhibit may discuss what is
newsworthy. i think that nahbs should canvas each
and every exhibitor and urge him to sign up for the
forum and vent atmo. as it stands, it appears that
the participants there are dave, carl, and myself, plus
the many newbies and lawyers wishing to leave white
collar work and join us in the grunt work. nahbs has

I'm not a framebuilder, but Richard's is a very professional and appropriate way to handle this matter. Don, it's worth it to get all the framebuilders onto a secure, private thread and hash it out among yourselves. The rest of us are really just a bunch of petulant customers who want this show in our own backyard. Customer perspective is important and you've gotten plenty of it, but you all are the ones who have to run the business (both the framebuilding and the show).
