Doctor Brooks, you are a gentleman and a scholar. (they do not always go together).

The word "gentleman" = a chivalrous, courteous, and honorable man. That is YOU!!!

Could not have been more deserved. Johnny, thanks for letting us know. PETE

Therefore the Sage embraces the One,
And becomes the model of the world.
He does not reveal himself,
And is therefore luminous.
He does not justify himself,
And is therefore far-famed.
He does not boast of himself,
And therefore people give him credit.
He does not pride himself,
And is therefore the chief among men.

Is it not indeed true, as the ancients say,
"To yield is to be preserved whole?"
Thus he is preserved and the world does him homage

Hey dbrk,

I didn't know you taught at Rochester - congrats on the award from a former denizen of Hutchison Hall. I did my PhD with Jim Farrar so I spent a lot of time down in the basement. You might have seen my beat up Raleigh Gran Prix commuter bike if you around in the early '80s (or maybe my Zeus on the rare occasions I rode it to campus).

Just out walking the dog. For the record, the Department web page picture is from 1986, the year I was hired at the University of Rochester. I'm more than a little embarrassed by being outed and for all of your kind words.

see you at the Ramble,

This award is probably long overdue. Word has it that Douglas's classes have been filled to capacity, with a long wait lists for the past several years.

I am really looking forward to the Ramble.

Ok, people start a tribute thread and you reward them with a photo of your butt (and your dog's)?

It's a lovely honor to have from one's students and I'm sure that you're very rightly pleased.

Probably the only photo in which dbrk is ahead of Miraculous Mira, the Silken Windhound! :)

Mira's been clocked at 30mph in the driveway ---some will remember the driveway here is...long. I don't think I could get up to that speed on the gravel even on the 650B! And I'm also happy to say that she is doing pretty well right now. She has a degenerative endocrine disease that requires plenty of encouragement to eat. Besides, no one reallllly wants to see a picture of me. She's a beauty.

I was a freshman at the U of R in 1986 - yikes. Totally missed taking a course with Prof Brooks unfortunately. Congratulations on the honor. The U of R might want to start a cycling program (club or team) considering they have one of the world's authorities of bike on their roster.
