Most of my campy junk ( three groups) is from 2003, so it's old and antiquated. I just got a new 2007 set of chorus shifter and a centaur RD for my new cross (zank) bike for this fall :) I also got an ultra narrow chain. Most of my old cassetts are shot but one or two are just fine and I will continue to use them. Will they work with the new chain? Are the pulleys the same with on the RD?
Another confusing thing I read in Velonews recently was about Katie Comptons cross bike. Her mechanic said that Campy chains don't work well in mud, and he prefers wipperman (or something else I cant remember.) My older 2003 10 speed centaur works well for cross. Is the new narrow stuff not as good? When it's really muddy nothing in my experience shifts perfectly...Is he just confused?

Just match Campy 10sp to Campy10sp. Whats the dilema?

Chain with? It's all 10 speed.

Ok cool. I though the new 07 cassettes were narrower. What about the mud issues? Does the new chain not work as well in the mud? Did you run shimano this season?

cassettes are the same spacing and cog width, the new chains are just a little narrower. a couple of my road bikes have the new narrow chains and they work fine. my sachs cross and my winter eddy and a couple others still have the wider chains. they work as well as you could expect based on conditions. in mud, grit and torrential conditions they kind of suck.

i haven't yet used a new style narrow chain in real bad conditions but i can't imagine there will be any real difference.

i don't know about you, but i'm not a big fan of wipperman chains.

I ran SRAM. It's all about 1:1 ratio.

In the past I have run Shimano 9sp Chains and Cassettes (with Campy 10sp Ergo's) as the cogs are wider apart yielding better function in mud compared to 10sp setups. Cheaper and slightly lighter as well. We are splitting hairs at this point though.

No competitive cross experience whatsoever. But for me the performance runs from:
Best: Campy UN
2nd: Campy 10 spd standard
3rd: Wipperman

You could guess that the tighter tolerances (5.9 mm vs 6.2 mm) could make the UN chain less desirable in the mud...

Awesome post. That's probably the info Shino was looking for.

fwiw, atmo spec'd a narrow record chain on my ride when he built it. Works fine in mud and snow.

Is the END near?

You could guess that the tighter tolerances (5.9 mm vs 6.2 mm) could make the UN chain less desirable in the mud...

If you measure, you'll find no difference in tolerances, the UN chain is simply narrower, leaving more side clearance between adjacent cogs. The tightest area is the fit between the driving cog and the inner plates, where clearance is reduced by about .003 inch. All brands of 10 speed chains are now very close to the same 5.9mm width.

I have found a KMC chain to be setup with more clearance between inner and outer plates, when new, than other brands, so it's got more side flex.

Shimano and KMC chains have about .003 inch more width inside the inner side plates than the Campy UN. Campy cogs are also about .1mm or .004 inch thicker than Shimano cogs, so the overall clearance is about .007 inch less, with a Campy UN chain and Campy cogs. There's still a lot of clearance though, about .023 inch.

I'm allergic to cats. There has to be cat hair in that beer.

Wow that is one cute kitten Darren. You shouldn't start it on the sauce yet. That's just not right. He's even cuter than Your_Fiend!

No way! That cat is cute. Don't lick it and cat hair will not be a problem.

Obviously Darren enjoys beer-battered whole fried kittens as much as I do.
