Funny how hearing a song can bring back a load of childhood memories.

BETTE MIDLER LYRICS

"Wind Beneath My Wings"

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
It must have been cold there in my shadow,
to never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that's your way.
You always walked a step behind.

So I was the one with all the glory,
while you were the one with all the strain.
A beautiful face without a name for so long.
A beautiful smile to hide the pain.

Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.

Did you ever know that you're my hero?
You're everything I wish I could be.
I could fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.

Did I ever tell you you're my hero?
You're everything, everything I wish I could be.
Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings.

Oh, the wind beneath my wings.
You, you, you, you are the wind beneath my wings.
Fly, fly, fly away. You let me fly so high.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.

Fly, fly, fly high against the sky,
so high I almost touch the sky.
Thank you, thank you,
thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings.

Born in 1970, I was given a Bugs Bunny AM radio at age 5 or 6. I listened to 'Band on the Run' often, it just came out and I really dug it. I was enrolled in percussion lessons at the time, really grooved on music. 'Lucy in the sky with Diamonds' used to be on the radio often too, I think Paul's music kept the Beatles tunes even more alive in the sense they were played regularly.

I caught McCartney on tour, 'Tripping the live Fantastic' in 1990 at Giant's Stadium, awesome show.

Big fan of Wings I am. Also, fwiw I lived in an apartment in the early 90's. All the roommates, we used to puff the magic dragon and clean on Sundays(it was a party palace) vacuum etc with 'Wings Greatest Hits' blaring on a killer Onkyo system in the background. Dunno why, no real answer.

That's cool. I just remember Wings being played on the radio a lot back then. And as a kid it was music that was fun and easy to get into. Since it was in the background a lot there are lots of childhood memories tied to it. Band on the run came on the radio yesterday and it brought me back. I think it's a cool thing that music can do.

As far as Wings being "mamby-pamby" or "girlie" music....I know there are a lot of people my age who whether they will admit it or not, will sing or hum along to one of these songs when they come on. :p

I never cared for Wings. Paul's lyrics were so amateurish. The Beatles were the perfect example of a group being (much) greater than the sum of its parts.

Back in the day of those Beatles, the really cool cats were still into Elvis and doo-wap. According to Dad. Watching and listening to Paul live in 1990, he played a ton of Wings and it rocked.

As far as Wings goes... You know how the great bands are synergistic, more than the sums of their parts? Well, the Beatles are the shining example of that dynamic. Wings, on the other hand, allowed one of the (admittedly extremely talented) members to indulge all of his impulses without restraint.

The only good thing Wings did for the 16-year-old me is to lead me, via their triple-record live album, to "I've Just Seen a Face" and the true motherlode, Rubber Soul.

Agree. Lennon had a way with lyrics and McCartney was great with a tune. "Yesterday" was Paul's high water mark with regards to both. I used to think they actually wrote their songs together and the breakup revealed each's strong and weak points. That they rarely collaborated in songwriting came as a surprise.

Just listening to the words to "Band on the Run" is enough to make my brain hurt.

Every so often I'll see a particular type of driver doing a particular thing and "blondes on the phone, blondes on the phone" will run through my head.

Some of you folks are analyzing PM's music/lyrics which is fine. I was trying to touch more on the connection of music to memories. Heck, I was only 8 - 10 years old at the time so I certainly was in no place to analyze the music. But, that being said, for someone with "amateurish" lyrics, he sure cleaned up at the bank...and the popularity poll.

Hey, at least he did it on his own be for the formula makers came along.

WilliamHey, I feel you. Every once in a while, I hear "Love Grows where my Rosemary Goes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tr6H1a7YUac)" and I'm nine again, playing in my parents' driveway in the sunshine.

The Beatles, the first Boy Band. Elvis was King before The Beatles had a beat. Long live the King. "Elvis was religion to me" said John Lennon.

Hearing Grace Slick from the Airplane sing "Somebody to Love" is, for me, an autopilot trip back in time to the summer of 67. Thank god the vinyl was thick back then because I would have worn that one through.
