We needed some balance -

In my mind the beauty of a car, or any object for that matter, is not just the plain aesthetic but it's the design considering the the use of the object. Take for instance the Lotus Elite pictured below. In my humble view it's the most stunning mix of design, aesthetic and construction in the history of the automobile. The design objective was to build a car that weighed less than 1500 pounds and could be driven, in stock form, to LeMans, race and win it's class, and then be driven home..........all while getting 40 mpg on the highway. It did all of the above, four times. It's the first car ever made with a completely fiberglass chassis. No metal. It has an aerodynamic profile designed before computers and has a drag coefficient of .28 . Extremely low for a performance car designed and built today let alone designed by eye on the back of a napkin in the late 50's. It has a flat bottom and the top profile gives actual downforce without the use of wings or air damns. Unheard of now let alone then.

Simply stunning and seeing one in person nearly brings me to tears. Likewise with the Bugatti Atlantic, the Porsche 356, the 1938 Talbot-Lago SS130 and the Volvo 1800 ES.

I love pure design.

Steve, is that a predecessor to the wonderful BMW 633 CSi from twenty years ago? I seem to recall that was the model designation. Very beautiful.
One of my favorites that is both stunning and relatively easy to find for restoration is the Triumph TR3-A sportscar. Look at the delicately scalloped door/beltline on that car:

More stuff that makes me smile.

The vehicle at the top isn't so much a beautiful object to look at but a beautiful object to understand. One of nine Stout Scarabs built in the 30's pre-dating the first mini-van by decades. It has a safety cell, a rear engine and suspension with a roll center higher than it's center of gravity so it leans into corners instead of out. Literally still ahead of it's time.

The others -

Renault Alpine and of course a Mercedes Gullwing Coupe.

That 1938 Bugatti T57SC Atlantic Coupe was restored here, in town, by the Paul Russell Co. The work they do is absolutely amazing! Check out their portfolio (http://paulrussell.com/concours-awards.html) . It is actually a little crazy, in a little working town of a bout 3,000, to see a car drive by valued at $10m +

Paul, Alex, and the boys are in for lunch regularly ... nicest bunch of guys you will ever meet. Great stories, too.

i had a red 250 gt bertiletta lusso in the late 70's.
it was red(of course) and was fun to drive. 3 webbers 2v with a close-ratio 4-speed and a 3:70 rear. it was always interesting to fill it at a crowded gas station because it had a 36 gal tank. you had to let the air out of the spare in order to get it out of the trunk. i am probably aging myself, but in my early days , i was a real car nut. it would be embarassing to list all the cars that i have owned.

Fabulous list already, here are some of my favorites, some already mentioned.

1930's SS 100 (The company had to change their name to Jaguar as SS had a certain connotation after WW 2)

1930's BMW 328

1948 Jaguar XK 120, Jaguar C Type, D Type, XK-SS (had to unload those remaining D Types after they were no longer competitive (or the factory could just mysteriously burn down with the remaining production, oh wait, we did that too)), Series I E Type

Austin Healey 100-S, Bugeye (Frogeye) Sprite, 100-6 and 3000

Lotus Elan (because the Elite was ahead of its time and monocoque fibre glass was not ready for suspension and driveline mounting). Besides, Emma Peal drove an Elan in her catsuit!

Porsche 550 Spyder, Porsche 904

Aston Martin DB-5, original V-8 and the one that Roy Salvodelli and Carroll Shelby won LeMans in.

1963 - 67 and 1968 - 71 Corvettes

1964-1/2 Ford Mustang

Ford GT

Any Ferrari except the 308 GTB-4

Any Maserati (even the Citroen-Maserati SM) except those nasty late 70's Biturbo variants and the K-Car basedChrysler-Maserati TC.

You know, I've seen lots of beautiful cars here, and maybe I can find a pic my friend Jeff sent me of his old Lotus to add to the lot, but there's a particular model of Mini Cooper that's really stunning. I saw this car in the movie the Italian Job. It had Charlize Theron driving it. Does anybody know the model? There were a bunch of other Minis driving around in the movie and they were similar, but somehow didn't do it for me. The Charlize Theron Mini -- there was something about that -- awesome little car IMO.

As a card carrying member of the FCA (Ferrari Club of America) I could post pics of them all day but I'm a huge F1 geek so here's some of my faves.

Mercedes Benz W196 Streamliner. They found a loophole that allowed them to cover the wheels with fenders. It was very fast on circuits with long straights but the handling (and weight) left a little to be desired in the twisties.

+1............! I had no idea there were so few made.

The Lamborghini Miura was born at the 1965 Turin Motor Show where a bodiless P400 chassis was put on display.
Nuccio Bertone saw the chassis and offered Ferruccio Lamborghini a body for his creation. The resulting Lamborghini Miura, designed by Bertone's Marcello Gandini, was shown at the Geneva Motor Show the next year.

The public liked the Miura so much that Lamborghini decided to put the Miura into production - somewhat hurriedly. Early Miura's suffered from mild defects and 'niggles', worst of which was a tendency for front end lift at high speed. However these problems were gradually eased on later models.

The Miura is a purist supercar, and as such lacks any home comforts like air conditioning or a radio - besides the engine noise would have drowned out anything the radio had to offer.

The legendary Miura was manufactured from 1967 - 1973 with a total of 765 cars produced.

I think the current BMW 335 Coupι or M3 is a very nice looking car. Proportions are great.

Also, I think that in spite of my picture of the F1 car, they are not very pretty anymore. But exceedlingly to the point. The amount of downforce would allow them to drive upside down if such a thing were possible.

I think the Ford GT-40 is one of the nicest proportioned cars ever made. Very classic and timeless lines.

Alfa 8C 2900 in its various incarnations and coachwork... bellisimo!

http://www.conceptcarz.com/view/photo/223430,8963,0,1148/photo.aspx

In the early 1930s talented designer Vittorio Jano conceived what would become one of the most successful engines of the decade. 'His' 8 cylinder engine was made up of two four cylinder engines and featured twin overhead camshafts. The original engine displaced 2.3 litres and was installed in the Tipo B 'P3' Grand Prix racers and the 8C 2300 sportscars. The Tipo B racked up many Grand Prix wins and remains as one of the most successful Grand Prix racers ever. Le Mans and the Mille Miglia were the favorite playgrounds for the 8C 2300, winning the 24 Hours race four years running from 1931 to 1934. Over the years displacement grew to a final size of just over 2.9 litres by 1935.

In 1935 Jano's 8 cylinder engine, in 2.9 litre form, was the base for an all new sportscar, the 8C 2900A. In Grand Prix tune the engine produced a hefty 255 bhp, for reliability reasons a lower compression 220bhp version was installed in the 8C 2900As. It proved very successful in racing, with as highlight a one-two-three in the 1936 Mille Miglia.

For 1937 Alfa Romeo announced the production of a limited number of 8Cs for road use. These were dubbed 8C 2900B and featured a 180 bhp version of the 8 cylinder engine. It was installed in a box-type chassis available in short and long wheel base configurations, both with all-round independent suspension. Most of the 33 8C 2900Bs built were fitted with lightweight Touring bodies, constructed following their patented Superleggera principal.

After parting ways with Enzo Ferrari in 1937 Alfa Romeo set up their own racing department, 'Alfa Corse', early in 1938. Alfa Corse entered five 8C 2900Bs for the 1938 Le Mans. Four of them were fitted with Spider bodies, the other with a coupe body. This coupe was specially constructed by Touring to cut through the air as effeciently as possible on Le Mans' long straights. Compression of its engine was increased and matched the performance of the 8C 2900A's powerplant.

The other story is that Lamborghini complained to Enzo about something on his Ferrari, to which Enzo replied something along the lines of too bad, if you don't like it, make your own car.

As I understand it Mr. Lamborghini was a very good customer of Ferrari. He'd made big money in the tractor biz and liked his spots cars. He went to Enzo and asked that certain things be done with his next car and Enzo turned him down flat. Feruccio thought this was the worst customer service and thought he'd make Enzo pay for his attitude. And he did. Cars like the Miura changed life for Ferrari and made them up ante to stay on top.

Competition is a good thing.

Some thought this little blister of a car an eyesore, but to me it was beautiful. My first brand-new car at 19. It was slow, fragile, and tempermental. 60 HP was barely enough to beat a stock VW, but it got me around, and the girls thought it "cute". With a bike strapped to the roof, it shouted out 'dork-mobile'. It handled well, and got great mileage.

Ironically, Fiat, who owns a controlling interest in Ferrari also owns CNH Global which is the second largest agricultural equipment manufacturer in the world. They own the US-based Case IH company and the last 2 years at the F1 USGP the Ferrari's ran with the Case (tractor) logo on the nose.

I've owned two, both new. One of Giorgetto Giugiaro's best efforts IMHO. In my first response to this thread I almost posted a pic of my 1979 platinum metallic / red example.

Can am cars in the late '60's, essentially without rules. Mclarens dominated, Bruce and Denny.

Indeed they did, at least until the 917/30 showed up :) I've always liked the 'Batmobile' version - the M20.

I haven't heard much about them but I did see a white one on the road in Fort Lee, NJ about a week before Christmas. In the NY metro area you can often see pre-production versions of new cars out on the roads with mfr. license plates.

I have been a fan of Audi styling since the days of the 5000 (even with its sudden acceleration issue, real or not). It is nice to see Audi with a 2 door coupe again, besides their current day Karman Ghia, er I mean TT.

The current Audi grille is not their best work though, the previous generation grille looked much better IMHO.

re: Scarab- Reventlow provided $$ and inspiration to get the project started. Chuck Daigh was the usual test driver besides being very competitive in the races when the team ran a car for Lance and one for Chuck.

I think they were built by Troutman and Barnes in the LA area. I have also seen the Troutman/Barnes Special which they built before the Scarabs. It originally had a Mercury flathead V-8 and has been restored to that configuration for vintage racing today and the family resemblance is obvious.

In the late 1950's they enjoyed quite a bit of success until Maserati introduced their "Birdcage" cars. Only 4 cylinders but much lighter and lower. I laughed at the idea of those ugly little things beating the thundering Scarabs with their 331ci. Corvette engines until I checked my stopwatch. Broke my heart--like watching Joe Lewis in his last fights.

As I recall Augie Pabst bought one and renamed it the Meister Brauser as Meister Brau was one of the beers made by Pabst Brewing. He was and still is a darn good driver as he was racing this car at the Monterey Historics a couple of years ago. The other Scarab was bought and raced by Nickey Chevrolet of Chicago. They painted it their signature purple and referred to it as "The Purple People Eater".

As an aside, I think it's fun to bet people that these cars were the world's fastest "beetles".

I believe 60 Minutes was well and deservedly embarassed for manufacturing some sudden acceleration instances in addition to manufacturing their exploding pickup truck footage, were they not?

My 5000 Turbo certainly had sudden acceleration. Every time I entered a freeway, I was suddenly in trouble with my wife.

I agree with you, but if I drove through my garage and killed my own kid I would go to my grave believing my foot was on the brake and the car just kept accelerating. Maybe that shift-brake interlock device that all cars with automatic transmissions now have is just a tad better than lawyers tabs on bike forks?

Here is an interesting story about L. Reventlow. He was actually a count and his step father was Cary Grant. He was married at one time to James Bond girl Jill St. John and later to former Mouseketeer Cheryl. He was more famous for his cars which succesful in the U.S, and for building America's first Formula One car which was raced in Europe. He died in a plane crash...not in a car.
