View Full Version : Campy Front Der - 32 = 31.8? Help please

Recently ebayed a Record FD that was advertised as a 31.8. The clamp says 32 and it doesn not fit the IF Crown Jewel I am building, which the previous owner told me took a 31.8. Several eBay ads state that a campy 32 is the same thing as a 31.8, but actually .2mm seems like a noticable difference?

So what's the deal? Is it not a 31.8 tube, is a campy 32 really a 31.8, or what?

I'm thinking I could ruber shim it and make it work, but wasn't expecting to. I got a great deal on the Der. so would like to use it if possible.

Thanks

Perhaps best to actually measure the tube and FD with some calipers or similar precision measuring tool. "Claimed" and "is" are different sometimes.

I had some creaking issues with my clamp on FD and carbon frame. I used some teflon tape under it which may work for you. Also, note the recommended torque settings for the FD.

I would use a caliper to measure the tube and the clamp so I would know what I had.

When you put the derailleur on and tighten it, does it slide right down the seat tube or is it just loose to the point where you can move it by hand?

While it can't hurt to measure the ID of the clamp, it's not that simple, since it's hinged. If you close the clamp all the way, I expect it would measure well under the diameter of your ST, in the area 90 degrees from the hinge and it won't be round at all with no gap between the two halves, in the clamp bolt area. If it measures less than the ST diameter, then it should clamp down tight. If it doesn't, a simple pop can shim is the perfect thickness to make up a .2mm diameter difference.

A can or metal shim is a better idea than rubber as well--rubber shims have a way of moving under tension in undesirable ways.

Derailleur clamps come in 3 sizes. 28.6mm 31.8mm and 35mm

It's not clear from your description if the 32 clamp you have is the wrong size,
or if it's just not tightening enough to hold in place.

Any chance your frame has a 28.6mm diameter seat tube?
If the frame is steel, and the seat post is 27.2 the seat tube is likely 28.6
and not 31.8mm.

If your seattube is 31.8 and the Campy clamp is, indeed, 32mm and not 31.8mm, you are only looking at a difference of 62/100ths of 1%. It shouldn't matter.

It has to be a 28.6. The 32mm just falls down the tube fully clamped. I guess it's back to the hunt. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a 28.6 seat tube.

Send an email to E-Richie... he'll sell you just a 28.6 clamp for a campy derailleur
and you can switch yours over to the right size. Campy stopped making 28.6
about 2 years ago, so they expect you to buy a braze on derailleur, and use
one of those clamp on adapters. Coco Chanel would NOT approve.

This is a big fyi: one of the great things about Campy is that if there is an issue, like the one you're having, you take that part with you to Sunday Mass. On the way out, dip your clamp into the Holy Water and presto magico, it'll be 28.6. Or buy one from atmo, your choice. :D

Try this. Place your clamp up against the screen of your computer and say, "Sean Kelly, Sean Kelly, Sean Kelly" three times with the lights out. It might work. Try. If that doesn't work, try, "Dana Scully, Dana Scully, Dana Scully" three times.
