View Full Version : Oh, the horror! An atrocity sighted today.

Today I wandered into one of the bikeshops here on Bainbridge Island and what did I see but a beautiful Richard Sachs, resplendant in an new white paint job from JB, clamped into the repair stand for assembly.

Imagine my shock when I saw that this bike had a threaded steerer, and the "mechanic" setting it up had approximated the quill stem by using one of these "adapteurs"

http://harriscyclery.net/merchant/370/images/small/SM1141.jpg

and then clamped on a 1 1/8 threadless stem to a set of conventional handlebars - not oversize. I mean, the indignity. The atrocity! Not to mention the weight.

I staggered outside, threw my leg over my new 35 year old bike, and wobbled homeward in the cold light of the midwinter sun. No "planing" today.

Why would anybody do such a thing ? As opposed to fitting a quill stem, I mean ? There was no obvious fit problem that I could see. Maybe they just did'nt know any better. Ugh.

Scarey sheet dewd. Could you at least run back in, yell fire and "rescue" the hostage? Be reasonable ;)

I have a 1A, XA, and a Grammo out in my garage here in Poulsbo. I never got those BI people. What's next, a carbon fork?

So you've got white trash on your island; how about trailer parks? Not yet? They're next. And don't think the islanders aren't watching NASCAR when the curtains are drawn...

If stem length isn't dialed in yet, wouldn't in be easier to test ride with various threaded stem lengths as they are easier to swap out. Once done, the proper stem of said length can be installed and all is well again.

No?

It's as bad as the NY Knicks. It's as bad as serving a Belgian beer in a styrofoam cup. I have a case of Leffe Blond.

Where I am, quills and threaded headsets have been tossed in the garbage a lobng time ago.

I was offered a quill adapter as well as a threadless headset by 2 of my LBS'
when I went in sourcing for quills for my #2 nineties's bike.

In the end I shipped in a nice 3T evol quill ... shipping was almost as much as the stem and in total its costs me more than a what a ritchey WCS and quill adapter would costs but
I didnt mind. somethings just need to be "right".

I use an adapter on my Concours.

Thus far, only a small number of people have refused to ride with me because I have an adapter.
