I have a TA crank autoextractor bolt with a stripped socket (6mm) and would appreciate anyone's suggestions on how to remove it!

After using the TA autoextractors on a couple of bikes, I would warn people against them. The 6mm socket is really very small for the torque required to install cranks, and the socket seems to be formed from relatively soft metal, and is relatively shallow.

I have had much better luck with the FSA's which have an 8 mm socket and to date have not given me any problems; they are also less than half the price.

Try a fractional size allen wrench in the hole to see if you get a snug enough fit to turn the bolt. You could try to epoxy the wrench into the hole, then turning when cured.

Use a Dremel tool with a cutting disc to slice a groove across the face of the bolt. The groove should accommodate the largest screwdriver blade or similar tool you can find. The easy way is to stack the cutting discs on the shaft to the thickness you desire. If it's a screwdriver, you'll need one with a square shaft. Place the screwdriver in the fabricated slot and an adjustable wrench along the flats of the shaft for leverage. Turn.

Have your local welding shop weld a bolt or allen wrench onto the trashed face of the auto extractor. Use that piggybacked bolt/allen wrench to remove the trashed autoextractor.

Use a Hanson extractor set. Below is what I JUST used for a similar job...but they are out of stock. I believe the other listing I've pasted is the same set.

This is a very good quality extractor set and the right way to do the job. You'll also need a tap handle...which you can get anywhere. Don't fergit to smack the extractor firmly after you've made your pilot hole. Go slow...use cutting oil and maybe lay the bike on it's side and soak with ammonia for a day to loosen any corrosion first. It'll come out.

dmsi:

I stripped a crank-to-bottom-bracket bolt and used this to remove it. It worked like a charm, and it's worked great in other applications, also. It will also work for the TA autoextractors, I'm sure.
