Anybody know why the brake pad backing plates have wings on the bottom? Flanges that point down and out at 45 degrees on each side. I'm looking at 2006 Campy vintage but I think the 9 speed Shimano was the same. I just can't figure what the purpose of that design is.

To guide the tire back into place as the wheel is replaced.

Makes for a faster wheel change in a race.

Campagnolo brakes have had them since the late 60's
but they may not have been the first.

they make you sexier. if you keep the bike in the bedroom its place to hang the undies.

I think they help the bike to plane once you get up to speed.

They actually produce LIFT. It's obviously not enough force to lift your bike off of the ground. But it can raise your frame up to a few mm depending on how fast you are going. This has the effect of reducing the downward force that your weight exerts on the wheels. And this in turn reduces rolling resistance. Haven't you guys ever taken an engineering course. Geez!

;) :D

I reverse mine so the wings provide downforce for better traction and cornering.

Campy specifically designs the Record version to mitigate the shock wave in transonic flow. :D

Shimano does not compensate for this eccentricity.
