Okay, so I have, for some reason, been having a serious case of lust for the new Dura-ace crankset.

Is it that much stiffer? I have ridden c'dales hollowgram crankset and on that you definately feel how stiff the bb/crank design. If the durache stuff is anything like that i would have to get it.

It is also lighter than my current setup (octolink ultegra double) so i could shave 70 grams but I have a fear of becoming a weight weenie.

I can't justify it to myself as a "treat" because I bought a new bike a few months ago.

Anyone out there have any experiences with it? Any direct comparisons (ie same frame, but swapped cranksets to new stuff). Thanks!

I changed my DuraAce 9 speed 53x39 to a FSA Carbon microdrive 50x34. You'll think you have dided and gone to heaven, I run a 12x27 on the rear.
You want get there any faster but you'll feel better when it's over.

It's clearly stiffer. However, if I already had an Ultegra crankset, I probably wouldn't replace it, that's just because I have different items on my lust list.

i actually had some FSA cranks on my bike and didnt like them very much. Maybe my curiosity is getting the better of me. Thanks for the info.

DA ranks way high on the bling bling scale. I can't really say if the cranks are stiffer than my Ultegra because I think most of what I notice is actually the frame (ti vs steel). I have no complaint about mine.

dude, people who's opinion i trust say its much stiffer. of course, these people are bigger than me, more powerful riders than me. if you are a big, powerful rider, and perhaps race, then perhaps (or even probably) you'll notice and use the increased stiffness. i had the new DA crank on my IF, then switched to an FSA (purely to get compact gearing that the DA crank doesn't run right now) and i personally couldn't notice loss of power. but i'm a spinner. if you are more powerful, the DA may be your ticket.

I had the FSA cranks on my bike, the one that currently has ultegra on it. I found them to be really soft. They were the pro carbon team issue jammies that came on Giant TCR 1. When i put the ultegra ones on it was a world of difference, the ultegra is so much stiffer. Maybe on other materials there is a diff. reaction but on the giant composite frame, the alum. cranks respond better.

I also know that the shop owner went to the cannondale factory tour and saw some deflection tests. The carbon cranks wobbled all over the place so maybe i am a bit biased, maybe its the mental thing.

I am not a big powerful rider but I am 6' around 165 and can spin or hammer. I guess i just don't dig carbon cranks. Thats why I am looking for the stiffest alum. cranks.

Velonews ran an article on cranks recently where they tested stiffness and weight. Many of the carbon cranks were covered as well as the DA10 but I don't believe that the Cannondale crank was included so you won't get insight on that option. As I remember the article the DA10 crank won in terms of what you get for stiffness and pay for in weight. I believe the article was written by Lennard Zinn. You can contact Velonews for an archive article or maybe someone can respond with a link.
