sometimes, especially on the trainer, you just need something loud and head-banging. my pick: social d.

the melvins

or

the dwarves

or

godflesh (the first album)

actually, i wouldn't like headbanging music on the trainer. for me, the key to really getting the watts out is to relax and flow with the pain. yes, it hurts. but additional tension isn't going to help the matter. let go, flow, and embrace the agony. its the only way.

same thing for muscle soreness. i was doing some tempo last night, with some other cats drafting the whole way. when i began to fatigue, the only way to stay on top of the gear was to relax everything, just sit on the seat, turn the cranks in smoothly, and keep a nice straight line on the road. pedal, and be one with the circles of pain.

ymmv, atmo yo

I was thinking about this this morning on the trainer...

I actually prefer mid-tempo music with some dynamics and surges - The steady roar of a band like Social Distortion or the Ramones becomes too monotonous for me.

I was listening to American Music Club's "Mercury" this morning - The transition from "If I Had a Hammer" to "Challenger" pushed me to about 110 rpm.

So, that's me...

I have been listening to social d for 20 years now. If they are within a 300 mile radius, I am there. Great band. I love on the live album when Mike Ness says, "Anyone want to hear a happy song?" The crowd goes wild, and then he says..."we don't play no happy songs."

I also like the Supersuckers for the trainer, among others.

agree that 100% pure high energy head-banging isn't good for trainers, yep need variety, but dang, there are just some chunks o' time when only something like social d, the ramones or even sisters of mercy will make the trainer tolerable. long live the ipod and its 10,000 tunes. :D

They dipped back into lots of the incredible older songs and didn't bother with material from Turbo, Painkiller, or Jugulator. Definitely solid tunes on Angel of Retribution, too. You guys have to check out the new Parlor Mob record coming out on Roadrunner soon. It's pretty cool. (disclaimer: I played most of the keys and piano on the record, so I'm perhaps a little biased). But it's great new rock, think Zep meets Black Crowes filtered through some Jersey-style Sabbath and some indie attitude.

I heard my buddies Dead Confederate from Athens described once as the "Death Star of rock" and that's pretty accurate. They are killer.

Also, I would add Shellac, Cursive, and Slint to the list. Off the top o' my head anyways. The afore-mentioned Mastodon is hard to top for sheer might.

Loved Prong's "Prove You Wrong". So ahead of it's time. Tommy Victor will be supporting Al Jourgensen on the final Ministry tour. Sad about the passing of Paul Raven.

Bob Mould's Sugar were one of the few (if only?) American band's signed to Alan McGee's now defunct Creation Records. A perfect compliement to labelmates of the time like The Boo Radleys, Swervedriver, Ride, etc.

agreed with an earlier post - the Melvins (esp. LIVE) are deafening. I saw them a few years ago and it was a great throwback to grade 12 in the mosh pit in the late 80's. Ugh - I am old!

Anyhoo, another classic is Black Flag. The really slow stuff from My War (eg., Nothing Left Inside) is still thrown on my Ipod from time to time.

I wonder whether my single mom Mom wondered if I was going to kill myself after listening to that stuff - I would sit in my room and read music magazines for hours with Henry Rollins chanting in my ear.

Cycling supplanted my obsession with music, and remains in second place for obsessions...

I don't have a whole lot of head-banging music in my opinion (but seeing some of the bands listed here, maybe I have more in some peoples' eyes).

When I go light on the head-banding music ... I go Metallica. When I go heavy I pick up Extol, Living Sacrifice, Embodyment when they fell into the genre of christian black metal. I like Embodyment's new band The Famine:

I saw Social D a couple of years ago in Worcester, MA. They rocked just fine, but the volume was so low (even being fairly close to the stage) that I could converse with my date. My ears didn't even ring after the show (I'm also not quite with it regarding Mike Ness' eye makeup - it's way too pretty).

If I want loud, crass, twisted music I listen to Fear. Ever since I saw Decline of Western Civilization, I was hooked. Their stuff is so over-the-top offensive that it's (atmo) hilarious. You gotta love a band that has the nerve to sing a song titled "Beef Baloney" on Saturday Night Live.

Sorry to re-open a 4 year old thread. When I could tolerate the trainer, I listen to long, loud, heavy, changing tempo songs. From bands like Opeth, Dream Theater, Nightwish, Old Iron Maiden (Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Clansman etc.), and any of the progressive and symphonic metal bands (Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish etc.) with 2 or 3 singers.

Scorps rock, check out youtube for their current tour, they are still killing it, live. Klause, a freak of nature, still hits the high notes, at what, 150 years old. Classic. Latest record is pretty good, too.Scorpions fur sure

Maiden live, ridiculous. Best concert I ever saw was Judas Priest and Iron Maiden in the 80's
in MSG.

YES!!! YES....Also....I was lucky enough to see UFO in their prime...."lights out in London" was a badass.....I did go to the a Quiet Riot Show once (RIP) and Carlos Carvazo (sp) could really rip up the guitar.....
Lights Out is a classic cd. I still listen to it-great songs. I missed UFO, but saw MSG (Michale Shenker Group) open for Pat Travers. That was a good show.

100X on the Dream Theater!! Just pop in Peruvian Skys and I'm good to go. Throw in a little MegaDeth, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Chili Peppers, Rush, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Faith no More, Pantera, NIN, Motley Crue, Poisin!!
Whoa, sorry - side effect of the shuffle feature!!

Oh and lets not forget any of the bands that Tim Yeung drums in LOL

Sure I missed the shout in the 5-6 pages I didn't read, but just in case, Guns N' Roses, Appetite for Destruction. Old Black Sabbath, the Ozzy days. The Great Gonzo, Ted Nugent, songs like Strangehold and Free for All.

This is an honest question...Do you really think of this stuff and "head-banging"? This actually applies to many Social D is no sorta head-bang..the Vandals are as mild as Diana Krall but funnier..classify head-bang..in the Chrisonary Head-Bang=Pantera and the like.

I just posted the list off the Dudes soundtrack ...which includes a couple out of the HB genre. But there is plenty of HB there and I like the whole disk.

I suppose what constitutes "Head Banging" could have slightly different meanings to different people.
