Piraat Ale - You guys (Shino, etc...) recommended this. It's a hefty 10.5% !

Stone Vertical Epic Ale - Brewed with Spices. 8.4%

Dogfish Head Golden Era Imperial Pilsner - 9%

I've never had the Piraat Ale or this new Dogfish Imperial Pilsner so it should be interesting.

I'll let you guys know how it is...

Thanks for the recommendation on the Piraat. I better not have a hangover in the morning!

I like all of these an awful lot. I'm a huge fan of Hair of the Dog in general, and not pictured is an assortment of Dogfish Head (my fave from back east)

The two bombers have been aged in a secret location for nearly a year. I opened an Abyss with a few friends after Sacha's little get together a few weeks ago...it was better than I remember.

Also, Lagunitas Brown Shugga is yum. They have an oaked version this year, very good if you can find it.

Sierra Nevada Wheat Ale

Darren - have you tried the Stoudt's American Pale Ale? If so, did you like it? I'm planning on gettin' some soon.

Chimay is always at the top of my list. Those Belgian Monks sure know how to make great beer. I also like Clipper City beer from Baltimore. It's delicious and it packs a high alcohol content, 6% for the lighter brews and 10% for the darker ones. Check it out. You will be very pleasantly surprised.

Althought it is not seasonal, my favorite beer is a Bitburger

I can only find the premium at the German import store. Going to the website they had a a couple different flavors; Bitburger Sun and Bitburger Drive.

I am wondering if there is a little lost in translation on that one.

Just back from 2mo in Germany and in the North all we could get was either Bitburger Pils or vary brands of kolsch......The Pils was good stuff compared to some of the others I tried. Is it that difficult to get in the US? I figured any place that imports Germany beer would have some in stock.

If you like heavy, winter beers, here are three worth looking for:

(1) Storm King, Victory Brewing, PA-Imperial stout, 9.1%ABV. My absolute favorite, winter beer. Layers, and layers of flavor.

(2) Old Horizontal, Victory Brewing, PA-Barley wine, 10.5%ABV. Actually, on the low side, in alcohol content, for a barley wine. Many of this style are too cloyingly sweet, with a medicinal bite--think Vicks formula 44 plus grain alcohol--for my taste buds. Old Horizontal bucks that trend in a good way. Perhaps a bit easier to find, and more potent, is Sierra Nevada's Big Foot.

(3) Peche Mortel, Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel, Quebec, Canada-Imperial Stout w Coffee, 9.0%ABV. While the Storm King and Old Horizontal would pair well with some bittersweet chocolate, dried fruits, and strong cheeses, the Peche Mortel is a complete dessert course in a bottle. Perhaps the best marriage of coffee and chocolate flavors with beer ever. An unbelievable concoction. Good luck finding a bottle.

Two words, Jubel Ale. Deschutes Brewery. I look forward to it every year.

As a side note, there's an amazing bar near my house. They're having the "big wood fest," which features something on the order of 40 wood barrel aged beers. I had the lagunitas brown shugga (oak aged), a full sail porter aged in a Laphroaig Single malt barrel, and some other stuff. The next morning, I felt like I'd been hit with a 2x4. Luckily it was the bye week of the cyclocross series.

I had one of those the night of Sacha-fest as well. Got a few that I've been aging for a while.

A few years ago, Full Sail made a "Black Gold Imperial Stout" that was aged in bourbon barrels...also fantastic. They're supposed to have it again this year. Buy a case, drink half, let the other half sit for a year or two.

I've got to get out to get out to Walking Man Brewery to see if they've remade the Ho Ho Homo Erectus. My absolute favorite from last years winter ale fest.

Yep. I used to live in Wilton and New Canaan, and commuted to Greenwich by bike. Did most training rides in Redding, Bethel, Ridgefield. And really enjoyed some of the roads.

Now that I'm living in Easton, and really haven't been riding, the hills aren't such a turn-on. Actually, there isn't a flat ride to be had and it's messing with my half-hearted attempts to get back on bike.

Yes, I've had that beer- I like the Corsendonk better- It's much more mellow, less in-your-face with the alcohol content. Good, though. I like the Dogfish efforts. My brother lives in Lewes, and I load up the car with the special runs of brew they do when I visit him.

My latest fave from Dogfish was the "Zwaanend'ale", which was made for the 375th anniversary of the Dutch settlement that became Lewes, DE.

How about the Raison D'Extra? I have one from last year in the fridge right now...I remember being somewhat underwhelmed.

Is it me or are most of the DFH beers starting to taste very similar...kind of honey-ie? My wife and I had a Midas Touch, Burton Baton, 90min and 120min one night last week and while they all had their distinct differences, the same flavor was in the foreground of them all.

Less complicated (in a good sense) than the Dogfish head, takes its inspiration from the legendary Corsendonks... It's great. And, it's made 10 miles from here.

This review has not been influenced by the fact that I've already had two of them, nor that stevep made me drink old Keystone Light in his basement last night while listening to the best of doo-wop. He made me contribute to the pbs fundraiser..

i finished that bottle of Piraat and I'm pretty buzzed up.

this stuff is potent!

LOOKED fantastic, tasted good. The alcohol "flavor" lingered a bit longer than I'd have liked. I just tried a Konings QUAD...almost the same alch content... and it was mucho smooth. With not the alch linger. Netherlands, not Belgium, but what the hey. Very nice.

The dead soldiers from the Holidays....wait, we have almost another week to go.....

Chimay Blue...awesome, BUT it was a bit "institutional" after the Konings today. Blue my favorite, then Red, then White.

Konings Hoeven. Maybe my favorite so far.

Westmalle...double and triple....Maybe my favorite so far....wait....repetitive. Awesomely good. More research needed!

Piraat 10%...good but lingering alcohol flavor that I could live without. Prefer the Konings with about the same alch content.

Ayingers....good, but stiff competition. Will try again.

Anchor Holiday 2007. Good, but was concentrating on the imports.

and now I'm dry. Will have to make another run in the next couple of days to restock for New Years....and more research!!!

I like my "holiday" beers big, but the spices can stay in the gingerbread.

Here's what I had:

Boddington's - This is pretty bad. No, really. This has definitely declined over the last, oh, ten years. It makes certain members of my household happy, but I'm liking this style (pretty but flavorless mega-macro ales) less and less. Never again at this premium price point ($41/case).

Victory Storm King - Off cask at the brewery. Yes. Oh, yes. I'll stop before I wax rhapsodic.

Sierra Nevada Celebration - OK. I'm not a huge hophead, not that it's that hoppy. "Intangibles" are not that great. Need to get my fill of Cascade before we head into the Great Hop Shortage.

Ballantine XXX Ale - In the lime green can. Still a few left over from a case I bought ostensibly for grilling chicken. (It's PA. I have to buy cases.) This has also declined. I was fond of this in college, when it was one of the preferred brands of NYC homeless folk and was actually available in 64 oz. bottles. Used to have a nice tangy hop zip, for cheap macro swill. No more, meh.

Troegs Mad Elf - This one gets mixed reviews, but I'm a fan. Very well balanced, and the fruit is not overpowering. Champ in the hide-the-ethanol competition, atmo.

Schlenkerla Urbock - One of my favorite beers in the world. Smoked lagers are way underrated. A crime that these are $4+ in these parts. I need to move to Bamberg.

Dogfishhead India Brown - Still on the fence about DFH. Are they perfect, or are they too sweet? Depends on the portions and the temperature, perhaps. I won't decide before a pilgrimage, er, I mean "research trip", to Milton and Rehoboth Beach.

I've still got a Redbach, Oerbier, Ichtegem's and '05 Anchor Our Special to enjoy before the "holiday season" is up.

Lemme just throw this out there to make trouble: Piraat is a bit overrated. Sorry to be obvious, but Duvel is head and shoulders above the other contenders in this weight class. I'm not really wild about any of the Br. v. Steenberge products, although Gulden Draak is the best of the bunch.

Back to back this evening - first a Delerium Tremens. Was expecting good things, having never tasted this before, but it's not really my thing. I'd still take it over pretty much any lager, but it's quite light and belies it's strength (8.5%). Could imagine ending up on the floor all too easily

Followed by a Grimbergen Brune - nice, deep and malty and perhaps a little chewier than my usual go-to Leffe Brune. Very good winter beer, and all the better for being $6 for three at the local supermarket.... :-)

This stuff. When I finished my Doctorate, I bought the 3 quart + magnum, finished it and then made it into my office desk lamp. Sort of like Raisinettes from the Gods.

"check" -- awesome stuff. Also love the Chimay.....the ALE is 8% alcohol and you must finish the bottle of course once you open it. Fine way to spend an evening.

They retail at $8.50 for a 750ml bottle so I had one. Scary bit about this is it is so smooth and drinkable that at 9% you would never notice until the police knock on your door the next day.

Got another for tomorrow night, too.

Get this, but for 2007. preferableness to the Magnum size.
Anchor Xmas Ale - I didn't know they still made that? I used to drink it back in the '80's! Cool.

OT - is your avatar from a Monty Python sketch? I was viewing one of the DVD's I received for Xmas and saw a scene that looked like it....just curious.

Happy New Year!

Anchor christmas ale has been made every year since sometime in the 80s. I was able to snag two sixes of this year's offering.
