SO, I am looking around to possibly purchase a track bike frame. They look like fun. however, I am surprised that all the cheap track frames are Chromoly Steel. The are almost impossible to find in Alum. (that is not all aero and ugly.) It looks like only the more high-end track bikes are alum. Whereas cheap road bikes are all alum, and one has to pay extra for steel. Its amazing, you strip some gears, and all of sudden it is a different world.

I think it has to do with the number of pot holes one would expect to find on a track.

On the road
Aluminum - low tensile strength thick tube walls - low tech
Steel - high tensile strength thin tube walls

On the track
Aluminum - no pot holes to contend with, thin tube walls but not too thin -high tech.
Steel - tube walls are already pretty much as thin a they can make them

was his name robert something? there was a stud track rider from jamaica named robert in the berkeley area back in the early 80s who would ride fixed throughout the winter and hang with us no problem.

the Brass Knuckle is an in expensive aluminum track bike with a lot of street cred. those and the Bare Knuckles are quite thick around these parts.

I am wondering if any Off the Shelf Fixies come in around 15lbs. It seems most are fat and happy at 20+.

Should I screw the off the shelf bike and build one up the ole' fashion way?

Fixed: what is the your favorite ride? (be specific, not philisophical)

Soma Rush frame $375. Steel fork $120. Will build up a little heavy, but with right components under 20 lbs. TIG welded. 'Relatively' short front end. I just built a Delancey that comes in at 19 lbs 6 oz. with a front brake, track hubs and DT Swiss RR 1.2 aero section rims. The Delancey is lugged steel, triple butted Tange Prestige w/ steel fork that is about twice the price. You can probably find either frame at a lower price -- with a little digging. One drawback to the Rush -- it uses a 1" steerer. That might reduce the desirable stem/bar combos.

To get 'light', you'll probably need to go the aluminum frame route, use low flange hubs, box section rims, and some carbon pieces ( which will likely increase the price).
