Quick.Step boycotts awards ceremony

Meanwhile, no one from Quick.Step attended the ceremony. The team is boycotting HLN since the newspaper published doping charges against the squad in January this year.

Boonen had further difficulties with the newspaper this week after it published a story on his new girlfriend, 16 year-old Sophie van Vliet, the daughter of former pro Leo van Vliet, now organiser of the Amstel Gold Race and Amstel Curaçao Race. The sprinter at first denied the story, then admitted it, but said that the reporter had lied to him about where the interview would appear

Is Leo van Vliet related to Arie van Vliet? In the post-war years, at a time when there were so many great professional sprinters (e.g., Harris, Patterson, Plattner, Scherens, Senfftleben, Gerardin, Maspes), Arie van Vliet was one of the greatest.

I don't know whether this has changed or not, but I spent a summer in the south of france (villeneuve) and was shocked by how acceptable it was for very young girls to date much older men. For example, a 15yo dating a 29yo was totally fine. It struck me as bizarre, but they apparently didn't feel that way.

I know different societies have different cultures (and laws) but I just can not imagine dating someone that young. I am sure she is cute though. Wonder what they talk about?... so how was school today? any homework?

Since the subject of younger girls has risen, I'd though I'd pass along this warning of a Home Depot/Lowes scam:

Two seriously good-looking 20-21 year-old girls come over to your car as you are packing your shopping items into the trunk. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, with their chest almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. It is impossible not to look. When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say "No" and instead ask you for a ride to another Home Depot or Lowe's. You agree and they get in the back seat. On the way, they start undressing and making out. Then one of them climbs over into the front seat and starts crawling all over you while the other one steals your wallet.

I had my wallet stolen September 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, and 24th. Also, October 1st, 3rd, 7th, twice on the 15th, three times just yesterday and very likely again this upcoming weekend.

Wow! Some big calls there Viper. Boonen must have done something to you.

His palmares seems to indicate that he is not too bad on the bike already. I am sure that almost any cyclist on the planet would be OK being as incomplete as he is.

Ugly? Might not have had a career as male model but I can see what females might see in him - and plenty of them do.

Most impressive for me, however, is that off the bike he uses his celebrity for charity, especially a charity for kids with neuromuscular disorders as shown if you click on the thumbnail of him on this page:

http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/?pg=pelopics/pelopics07/pelopics-dec07

He also comes across as a decent guy, although that it is just my impression.

I am impressed with him on and off the bike. As long as he doesn't hurt anyone or break the law his love life is his to decide - we presume that because she is young they have nothing in common. They might not of course but time will tell.

Of course all this that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy seeing pics of Tom and his girlfriend...

He didn't do anything to me, did he do anything to you?

1). His ears scare me. I am scared of the ears. He could have been in LoTR etc.
2). At his age, his time to make himself better was yesterday; he's seems happy being a great 96 hour-racer. He can't time trial, can't climb and can only sprint; ashame he didn't drive himself to improve on TT or climbing.
3). He proclaimed himself before the 2006 TdF, the smartest and best sprinter. Before he dropped out, he could not take any 'hard' questions from the media/press (who wanted to know why he was doing so poorly etc) so the Team Manager organized a one day press boycott.
4). His agent etc lined his charity deal.
5). He's 29 and dating a 16 year old? Weak. Whatever country you're from or however 'fashionable' it might be, there is a reason he denied the fact he was dating a 16 year old.

So that means it doesn't count? Do you think the kids and their families receiving the benefit of his celebrity care who set up the deal? dont be offended but he's one of the top classics riders of the day. tour of flanders, paris roubaix, green jersey, etc, etc.

you show a distinct lack of understanding with comments like this.

just a thought. relax, you dont have to prove anything here.

you dont have to love him but he's by a long mile the best belgian classic rider racing today. thats what belgians do. he's the best at it.

if you need him to win the tour you will have a long wait. thats not what belgians do.

I suppose that Robbie Mac should also have spent more time on the TT bike or climbing big cols so that he could become a much more complete cyclist than he is. I am sure Super Mario now regrets not doing the same. Lance on the other hand clearly didn't spend enough time on sprinting as he didn't win enough bunch gallops in my books and is therefore also not a complete cyclist. And don't get me started on that Bettini's TT results...

How could I be offended since we know you don't intend to offend and since it's the internet and offending is only something Spock can do on the internet space only once every 13 years when his hormones rage and he fights his own Captain ala Pon farr.

You can realize that when you say things like, "You don't have to love him but he's by a long mile the best Belgian Classic rider racing today. That's what Belgians do. He's the best at it"...when you say this, it seems that we agree he a very good short-ride racer, however when you offer, "That's what Belgians do", it seems you're wearing some Belgian-colored glasses.

Either way, we don't all drink the Boonen Kool Aid, you're correct when you do offer, "You don't have to love him", I don't. Love is a strong word here, I love women like that etc. I admire his one-dimensional ability on the bike, I shrug at his inability to stretch himself beyond those Belgian races you so speak of.

It's great he can ride very fast for a little while. Lance caught static for his inability to dominate the SC (Spring Classics) and focus only on Le One Ride, but I meant what I said the first time; Boonen's inability to improve his own time trials is imo a flaw, worthy of de-bate and dis-cussion. Nobody would expect him to become a Pirate, Van Impe or Virenque uphill, but improve on his time trial? Yes.

Plus this 16 year-old dating thing, only Captain Kirk, Elvis or Jerry Lee Lewis could pull it off. Maybe Lucien Van Impe could too, atmo:

I view the week leading up to the Super Bowl as a joke. I also believe cycling is defined by those big, pointy, triangular nouns that must be climbed. Sprinters have their say, their moment and their glitz/glamor/glamour, but we don't all look at Boonen with dreamy eyes or kneel in awe.

Lance is at least a Top Ten Climber of All Time. Lance was also one helluva time trialist. Two outta three ain't bad.

to each his own. with all deference to the vast array of welcome opinions.. stevep's run more teams and helped more dudes learn how to race and has forgotten more than i'll ever know about this silly sport.

Nah, Viper gets it. Got it a long time ago. Not a Boonen-worshiper. I don't think he can hold the water bottle of Van Impe or Merckx. People *want* Boonen to be the next Belgian cycling God, but that doesn't make it so.

I guess you forgot, here's the length of Paris/Roubaix...it's ONE day of Hell which btw, thank you as you only help to reinforce my point (that Tom Boonen is a one-day, Stage specialist...amazing you even debate the point). Also, P/R is relatively flat, yet another element I raised about Boonen, thanks:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris-Roubaix

Also, in case you forgot, Flanders is a one-day race as well (again, thank you for reinforcing my point) steeper than P/R and certainly another day of Hell:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronde_van_Vlaanderen#Course

I know Boonen rocks a multi-day race, the Tour of Qatar and that's cool.

I think my Irishman was a far superior cyclist than Boonen any day of the week. Sean Kelly, rode long, hard, short, climbed...the whole burrito:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Se%C3%A1n_Kelly_%28cyclist%29

To agree with Swoop, horses for courses. Boonen is nearly 6'4", never going to be the best at anything, he's very good, sometimes great, but his career is what it is and will be what it can be: bright moments in certain races on certain days. I don't see/view Boonen as the brightest bulb nor someone who seems willing to expand and overcome his limitations (such as become a TT freak). He'll never be le climber, but at least become a TT ninja...

i think we can agree that when someone wins a race it mean's that they're the best on the day.

i also think we can agree that by its nature, we can't fold time over upon itself to compare riders from different eras.

if the point of this is to come to a conclusion that boonen sucks or lance rocks.. those guys don't think about the racing that way... nor does one use the same cognitive set when looking at a grand tour or a classic.

both require heroic efforts.. one of conservation, tt-ing, and climbing, and one of brute force, timing, and wattage. yes they're both bike racing... but the realities of the two are vastly different at times.

Viper, you don't get it.

Who cares if Boonen learns how to ride a TT? One-week stage races have become the province of grand tour riders. Modern cycling is about specialization -- and Boonen will retire with more classics wins than any other rider of his era, and possibly a green jersey or two.

Your're kicking a horse because it isn't a mule....

I suspect Tom Boonen climbs hills on bicycles faster than me.
I suspect Tom Boonen descends those same mountains faster.
I suspect Tom Boonen can likely pedal a bigger gear at higher RPM on flat terrain compared to me.
In short, if you're betting a C-note on a bicycle race between us, opt for Tom Boonen!

Nah, I'm merely a man. Seeing Boonen's Belgian arse nekkid while holding a ATMO lid in his hand ain't my cup o' tea. Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche are my men and I don't need to see their arses any sooner than I need to give away my box o' Lucky Charms.
