I'm thinking about an iPod for my wife, but I want an integrated docking station with charging and amp/speakers? What's the best under $200?

BTW, I searched "iPod docking" above and found nothing, so I hope I'm not (naw, not bothered if I'm) repeating well-plowed turf.

I got one from Sharper Image that I keep on my desk at work. It is called the iPulse and they were half price ($50) when I got mine. It has annoying pulsing light feature, but you can turn that off. I like it - it sounds good and it charges my iPod as it sits in it.

There are ways to handle those situations.

when you get that iPod also consider attaching a cable to your stereo receiver as if it were any other component. I have a charger nearby for extended playing.

I gotta second what Julia said; get the Klipsch! Although the model I recommend is over your budget, it's worth it. As a decades-long reader of Sound and Vision magazine (formerly Stereo Review), I remember this review of a Klipsch iPod docking adapter-it raved about the product. I doubt you could go wrong and you'll score major points with the missus!

Do the toilets still flush? Yes. That means he crushed or drilled it. The kid like power tools I seem to remember :D and my hammer  . Bits and pieces will show up here and there. ;)

After looking at the excellent info you've all provided, my current thinking is nano 8gb, 3rd gen, and Klipsch iGroove SXT. Size and aesthetics are part of the decision as it will live on somewhat limited kitchen counter space.

Three questions that I need info on:

1. Are these two items compatible? It may be obvious with the insert that comes with the nano, but want to be certain.

2. Second, unless I missed it, entirely possible, I saw no reference to charging with the Klipsch. It is there, yes?

3. Assuming only in-house use, what else do I have to buy (I'm thinking of an arm strap if she wants to use it working out)?

Thanks,

keno

FWIW, the one you see at my house is this one that Julia is touting.
It does recharge.

Klipsch are quality products and they have products at various pricepoints to suit your budget (unlike Bose, which I also like).

Just a word of warning - I find the Klipsch to be too bass heavy, and controlling it with the digital equaliser settings on the iPod only partly solves the problem. YMMV.

Altec Lansing. Cheep (40-70 range), portable, good sound in a small space.
Use with an Ipod mini.
Survived several months being deployed in the dust. It plays 16 hours a day.
...and is playing right now, back here in the dust....

I've had the Logitech MM50 for well over a year. Great sound out of a compact package and under $100. Cradles, charges and will run w/o AC power for several hours if desired. Comes with nice travel case and I take it many places.

My wife has the bose which has been lugged around everywhere and still sounds good. It may have been over $200 dollars though, but I'm not sure. It will accept all ipods from the original on.

Agree with pjm, the Audioengine 5 is the bomb. Imo, quite a bit better than the Klipsch.

It is above your budget, but believe I heard there is a smaller, less expensive version out now. They may also not meet your space concerns, but please give them a look. Very nice setup, and actually competes with name brand stereo speakers like klipsch, psb, polk, etc.

Jeff

The Audioengine 2, for $200, got a rave review from Robert J. Reina in the December '07 issue of Stereophile magazine. Liked 'em so much he bought 'em. To me they look like they would be more portable than the clunky one piece units.
