Cross bikes and disc brakes

a friend of mind crashed on someone else's disc equipped dale, fortunately kept her fingers out of the rotor but her knee wasn't as fortunate. It basically deli sliced the skin off her knee cap. I'm talking a good 2 inch diameter slice of her skin taken off. Deep.

Yeah that doens't happen all that much but reason enough for me.

At the handful of cross races I've been at, there were a fair number of Lemond Poprads being raced, particularly in the lower classifications. They went to a disc-only model a couple of years ago. Did they just give up on cross and market it as the great all-rounder it is? Or was this before the UCI outlawed discs? Are Poprads still in heavy use out there or has its day passed?

Just semi-curious. I had an early Poprad and thought it was a great bike. Really versatile and very good at most of the things you could use it for.

Here's a good application of disc brakes on a non-racing bike.

The brakes are fine for almost all types of riding, but they're indispensable when riding on snowy, unpaved, usually ungraded, roads. The discs provide highly modulated stopping power (which is not possible with rim brakes in these conditions).

I would. In FL disc brakes are overkill. But I have done some epic rides in the NC and WVA mountains with and without discs and I'd never go back either if that is where I rode most of the time.
