I led the starting sprint in first place, and was cheered on by Zanc and friends to a sixth place today. Some dude with red K's out sprinted me at the line, for fifth and a door prize. I'm very pleased regardless. Good times were had in Portland. More later..

a big storm blew in during the elites pounding rain 39 deg F.

tj put the smack down on the k boys with ryan in second. tj was very impressive and made this slick as snot uphill section look easy and it was anything but.

matt from the RS team got the hook in the A race. Zank looked solid in his race. Coylifut and myette10 were looking smooth in the 35+ stud race. The Zank bikes look dreamy in person. I calmly stood by and ingested a potent cocktail of diuretics (booze + coffee) all day. More tomorrow.

just back from the race, epic conditions, pounding rain, rising winds, mud everywhere but better traction than yesterday, ryan rode off and left everyone for dead. tj was 2d by about 1.5 minutes followed by wells, wicks and kabush (I think i got this right). What fun, bells, beer, muck and lots of great racing. McCormack was in there, what a stud.

Zanc and myette were in good form and are having a great time. matt got mid 20s in the 35 plus, not sure about zanc and terry as they were thawing in the car for the elites while matt was among the people cheering ad ringing our church bell.

i'm taking a shower and then my love and i are meeting the boston boys and terry and his family for some dinner at mcmenimans.

uber tough race today for all, but much faster and less slick than yesterday. there was so much rain that it was soupy as opposed to peanut butter. I saw Lynne Bessete climb off her bike in the pit and jump in the SRAM car which was immediately fired up. By the way she looked, I suspect it was hypo. what's interesting is how early it happened in the race. Saw another one of the women contenders hurried away with a scary look on her face to an RV to get her warm.

Tree Farm went off the front and quickly put 1.5 in TJ. Powers was about in 12th position for a couple of laps then quit. Same with Anthony. Driscoll was the revelation of the weekend. Horner didn't start today.

I preregistered for the race on Saturday, but not Sunday. My number on Saturday got called up first so I got the glory-hole money-shot. Because of the choice realistate I was finally able to get off the line in a full sprint without having to wait for the tools and Fred's clogging my path. It's harder than you think to get to the line first at ten in the morning all warmed up in a field of 100 mp C's. After my sweet start I spun out just before the turn onto the off camber hill and got passed by a about 5 guys. I held my place for the whole race, never feeling good. I felt terrible actually, and suffered like a dog for the entire 30 minutes. I kept waiting to get passed but it never happened. It was my best ever performance. The field was smaller and not as full of sand baggers as it was at the beginning of the season. Most of them probably upgraded to B's... I always knew I could have a fast start if I was in the right place. I regret the last four years now.
On Sunday I got called of to the line in just about last place, and had the other kind of hole shot. The sprint took off and there was a nasty wreck right in front of me and I had to almost ride over a downed racer. I really thought I was going to have to ride over his leg--luckily I got around him. I felt better on Sunday actually. I felt strong and fast and as if my body wanted to race, in contrast to the day before when I was racing with sleep deprivation.
I got to the race early and warmed up on my trainer in the rain. I was wearing some layers and a rain cape, two hats, and waterproof pants. After riding on the turbo trainer for 20 minutes I was hot. I didn't have a tent or anything. I'm kind of surprised that Zank and Terry were so cold. I wore bibs, two jerseys and arm and knee warmers, gloves and a hat. I wasn't cold. I guess the layers kept me warm.
There were only so many persons I could pass in 30 minutes and I wound up in 30th place. I didn't care I had an absolute blast riding on the muddy hills and slop. I was really happy with how I rode and with my new tubular tires. I 'm not going back to clinchers. They didn't roll off Chris. :) They don't roll like that.
We had probably the worst weather possible. I was in such a hurry to get to the race that I forgot my Gortex jacket and fleece that I was to wear after the race. I was ****ing freezing AFTER my race. I stayed to watch Zank roll around in the mud with the B's. He is a great guy and all smiles. I took some good pictures that I will post later. I had to split after Zank raced as I was freezing, soaked, and hungry, and my cute friend Cindy was done.
It was a good way to end the season. After nine races and three colds I'm happy to be done, yet kinda bummed too. I feel like I'm fast again and fit, and that feeling is always hard for me to let go of.

Shino - Nice results, esp Saturday. Aren't you glad you MTFU and raced Sunday? Also - You live in Portland, splurge on some rain gear.

Dude I won some uber-fantastic wood fenders at the party last night! Great meeting you BTW..Sorry I had to split on Sunday, I was a wreck. I'll post some good pix of you soon...
