i need to gear down the atala fixie for some more than flat riding.
what would be an appropriate gear?

38/17 which is great on the trainers. Outside it allows us to climb most of the local hills pushing 24lb bikes. Just was in Jersey City. Just figure out what you need to climb the viaduct at 14th street in Hoboken.LOL

Nice gear calculator (http://software.bareknucklebrigade.com/rabbit.applet.html)

Personally, a 48x17 is about right for the local rolling hills. But I've been SSing offroad for a while (32x17) and my knees are used to the abuse.
